Chapter 102 Cocoon To Butterfly
Chapter 102 Cocoon To Butterfly
Baron’s POV
What did she mean by that “rotten soul” comment?
Was she still harboring the anger of me taking her egg five years ago?
I stood there, watching her and found myself paralyzed by a rare, suffocating dilemma.
Should I say something?
Should I peel back the mask right now and risk her loathing, or keep the secret buried?
Before I could decide on a course of action, Natalie’s voice cut through the fog of my thoughts.
“Baron.”
I snapped out of it, blinking. “Huh?”

She was looking at the horizon, her profile almost distracting me. “Since you’re so close to the Witch Doctor, do you know what he likes? What moves a man like that?”
Her question startled me, sending a jolt of electricity down my spine. “Why are you asking that?”
“I want to give him a gift,” she said, her voice steady and filled with determination. “A gesture of gratitude. I was thinking of some rare medicinal herbs and perhaps a transcribed book for witches. I found references to some ancient botanical scripts during my time in the archives that I think he’d find fascinating. He did save me, after all, and I want to repay that debt myself. I don’t want to hide behind your protection forever.”
I felt a surge of joy so bright it was almost blinding. She wanted to gift me something so thoughtful and perfectly aligned with my secret passion for the craft.
“Whatever I like, he likes,” I said, my voice dropping an octave as I struggled to keep the smugness out of my tone. “Our tastes are…… identical. Just choose according to what you think fits my aesthetic.”
Natalie gave me a long, skeptical look and shook her head, clearly not buying my “identical tastes” theory. “Where’s the paper and pen I asked for? I already have an idea in my mind for the transcription and the sketches. I need to start before the light fades.”
“I’ll have someone bring them right away,” I answered quickly, eager to please. I couldn’t help myself; I stepped closer, slipping my arms around her waist from behind.
I rested my chin lazily on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair. “Don’t forget, you still owe me a pair of cufflinks. You can’t just shower the doctor with rare books and leave me with bare sleeves.”
“Aren’t you wearing cufflinks already?” she asked, her body stiffening slightly. I could feel the discomfort in her frame, it was obvious she wasn’t quite used to this level of unprompted clinginess.
I felt her mind drift.
I wanted her focused on me. Now.
Suddenly, leaned in and nipped her earlobe. Not hard enough to draw blood, but enough to make her smile.

“What are you doing? That was ticklish,” she said, giggling. She tried to push my face away with her hand, but I didn’t budge.
“Which man were you thinking about just now?” I asked, my voice low and rough, tinged with a genuine, stinging grievance. “Am! that easy to forget when I’m standing right here, holding you?”
Natalie let out a breath that was half–sigh, half–laugh. She looked at me in disbelief.
“Do your men know you’re this jealous and petty? That the Great Alpha of the Blackridge pack throws tantrums over a stray thought?”
“I don’t care if they know or not. What matters is that you know,” I said, letting my tone grow more wounded with every word. “If you treated me better, if you looked at me the way you used to look at that fraud, would I need to be jealous and petty?”
She turned her head slightly, her face looming so close that our breaths mingled. “Alright, alright, I’ll design something for you. But this time my theme is breaking the cocoon and becoming a butterfly. It’s about rebirth and light. It doesn’t really fit a man of your… reputation.”
“Who says it doesn’t? You’re the keeper,” I said, my voice firm with conviction. “As long as you want to, you can make it work.”
Her eyes lit up, the creative fire finally catching. “Fine, I’ll give it a shot.”
She shrugged, trying to regain her composure, and added with mock disdain, “Now move your head away, will you?
You’re like some overgrown husky crowding my space.”
