The second afternoon of our isolation felt like a fever dream that I never wanted to wake from.
The heavy drapes of the bridal chamber were pulled mostly shut, but thin, golden stripes of sunlight managed to filter through the cracks, slicing across the bed where Natalie lay wrapped in my arms.
For the first time in my life, the world outside didn’t exist.
There was only the steady beat of her heart against mine, and the heavy, intoxicating scent of a bond finally sealed.
My gaze drifted to her shoulder, specifically to the spot where I had put my mark.
It was still fresh, bruised and perfect.
I had claimed her.
Truly, finally claimed her.
‘I told you she’ll be fine… she’s perfect, Raze said.
I know… I replied.
“You looked so small,” I whispered, resting my chin on top of her head.
I breathed in deeply, her scent of lilies
finally mingling with my own scent.
“I wanted to burn the world down then, just to get you out of that pack. I wanted to tear Jensen’s throat out the moment he touched your hand.”
I felt her fingers move, tracing

The touch was light, but it sent a jolt of electricity straight to my core.
“Why didn’t you?” she asked softly, her voice muffled against my chest.
I tightened my hold on her, my voice coming out in a low rumble. “Because you didn’t recognize me and If I had taken you then, you would have just been a bird moving from one Cage to another. I needed you to fly on your own… I needed you to choose to be mine.”

Over those forty–eight hours, the bond between us had fused into something unbreakable, something beautiful.
Raze was unusually quiet, his golden eyes watchful and smug
Every time I looked at her, I saw her eyes catch the light, and for a split second, a flash of molten amber would swirl in her pupils.
My bare chest bore the faint red marks of her fingernails; a map of the last forty–eight hours that I wore like a badge of honor.
Natalie hadn’t moved in an hour.
She looked as though she wanted to kick me out of the room.
When I had made the mistake of leaning over her, my hand grazing the silk of her thigh to pull her back into my heat for one last moment of contact, she finally snapped.
“You’re not allowed to touch me for a month!”
She glared at me, her eyes flashing with a mix of tiredness and anger.
I had pushed her too far.
I coughed lightly, trying to summon some dignity while standing there half–naked and completely whipped by a woman half my size.
“Don’t. I just broke my fast, Natalie. If you make actually kill me. Raze will go insane.”

“Then die,” she bit out, pulling the duvet up to her chin with a hiss of discomfort.
Her whole body was sore. I could feel the tiredness through the bond.
‘You were too rough, Raze rumbled in the back of my mind. Sitting smugly, his golden eyes fixed on the mark on her shoulder. ‘But how could we not be? She tastes like moonlight and home. Even now, my teeth ache to sink in again, to deepen the claim.‘
“She’s in pain, Raze,” I chided, though my own wolf–instincts were purring in agreement. “Look at those bruises.”

I had marked her, yes, but I had also treated her like she was as indestructible as a wolf.
How could I have forgotten?
“I’ll get you some water and oil,” I murmured apologetically, placing a kiss on her face. “A soak will help with the muscle aches. I’ll put some healing salts in it.”
Natalie didn’t even look at me. She just stared at the wall.
I could feel a warmth spreading in my chest.
I rubbed my nose, feeling like a reprimanded pup, and slipped away into the bathroom.
The sound of running water filled the space as I prepped a bath with the heavy, soothing oils used for warriors after a long campaign.
I added dried winter–lilies and minerals from the high peaks.
When I finally stepped back into the bedroom, the room was silent.
Natalie had leaned against the headboard and drifted into a deep, heavy sleep without even realizing it.
The sight hit me with a wave of guilt so heavy it felt like a physical blow to my chest.
Damn it.
I really had overdone it.
The raw need to claim her had made me forget that her body was still human.
Next time, I swear to the Moon Goddess… I would control my beast.
‘Liar, Raze snorted. ‘Wain she wakes up and looks at us with that spark in her eyes again.
You’ll forget every vow and want to hear her scream our name until her voice breaks.
“Quiet,” I snapped at the wolf.
I moved to the bed, lifting her carefully into my arms.
She didn’t stir, her head merely lolling against my chest, her scent of lilies and warm skin.

I carried her into the bathroom and we sank into the oversized tub together.
I spent twenty minutes just holding her in the warm water, my large hands tenderly washing away the salt and the sweat of our passion.
When I carried her back out and laid her on the bed, tucking the blankets around her, she was dead to the world.
