I sat back, the silk of my bathrobe cool against my skin, though my internal temperature was rising.

“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice dropping into that lethal tone.

Waylon looked down at his tea, his hands steady, but his face tells another story.

“The third year after my daughter’s death, my younger brother and his wife took their one- year–old daughter on a trip. They were in a car accident halfway there; all three of them died.”

A heavy silence followed.

My brows furrowed tightly, “was it really just an accident?”

Waylon met my eyes, and for a second, he looked as though he were staring into a mirror of his own darkest thoughts.

He lowered his voice, the sound barely a whisper over the crackle of the fireplace.

“The human police were called at the time and everything was ruled an accident. I didn’t think much of it back then, but now that we know Natalie is alive… I can’t help feeling my brother’s family of three might have been silenced.”

‘Silenced, Raze growled.

This was something Waylon could only say to me.

If he had said it to Ruby, she would have lost her mind, blaming herself for everything.

Flynn looked as if he’d been struck.

Hearing his father suggest that Xenon’s death might have been a hit,

Flynn’s eyes widened, his face draining of color.

“Dad, are you saying that when my sister was switched at birth, it could have been deliberate?” Flynn’s voice was trembling with a mix of denial and horror.

“No way!” Flynn snapped, his fist clenching on the table. “After Mom got pregnant, they were so kind to us… Xenon and his wife were there every day. How could they have worked with outsiders to take my sister?”

Flynn wasn’t stupid, but he was struggling with the betrayal.

The only ones with the chance to manipulate things were the people closest to the family.

“Why don’t you come back tomorrow?” I said calmly. “She’s exhausted and will probably sleep until morning. I don’t want to disturb her rest.”

The words had barely left his mouth when the porcelain teacup in my hand shattered with a sharp crack.

Tea and leaves splashed out along with shards of white glass, soaking my fingers and the table.

‘Bring her back?‘ Raze roared, a sound that probably vibrated the windows. ‘Over our dead bodies. She is the Luna of Blackridge. She is marked. She is ours!‘
