Chapter 238 Childish Works Every Time
Natalie’s POV
The silence of my studio was a sanctuary guarded fiercely.

After the chaos of the last forty–eight hours, I needed the rhythmic scratch of my stylus on the tablet to drown out the lingering static in my mind.
My wolf, Nyx, was finally curled into a quiet ball of silver fur, satisfied that our pups were safe at preschool.
My phone vibrated against the mahogany desk, the screen illuminating an unfamiliar number.
I stared at it, my eyes narrowing.
Jensen.
It had to be.
He was like a persistent infection, trying to breach my defenses.
I ignored it, but the vibration continued, the buzzing grating on my nerves until it felt like a physical itch beneath my skin.
At last, I swiped to connect, not even bothering to say hello.
“Natalie, my mom’s back, but she was force–fed coffee. Did you have anything to do with it?”
Jensen’s voice blurted out the words the instant the line opened, his tone frantic and strained.
He sounded like a man drowning in a situation he couldn’t control.
I paused for a beat, a cold, mocking smile touching my lips. “Coffee? You think it was me?”
The image of Loretta Luke, the high–and–mighty Matriarch who lived for her impeccable reputation, being force–fed coffee was almost too poetic to ignore.
Jensen’s reply came quickly, breathless.

““No, no–that’s not what I meant. I just… there were no leads, Natalie. The guards found her dumped at the gates. She told me she went to see you before it happened. She admitted $haron provoked her, that she got angry… and then she threw it. I only just found out the details. I know you’re not the type to scheme behind someone’s back. I know the Natalie I loved wouldn’t do this.”
He hesitated.
Then, his voice dropped, turning softer, laced with a pathetic kind of hope. “Did you mention what she did to anyone? Could someone be acting for you? Someone trying to… defend you? Natalie, if you’re in trouble with these Northern people, you can tell me. I can still protect you.”
The words were phrased beautifully.
He was trying to play the part of the trusting former mate.
He wanted me to feel seen, to feel understood by the only man who once knew me.

Jensen, let’s be clear,” I said, my voice calm.

“I wasn’t happy with what your mother did to me at the cafe. But unlike the woman (used to be, I got my revenge on the spot. My kick left a mark, didn’t it? As for who took her afterward or what they did… that has nothing to do with me. Don’t come to me about this again. If you really can’t figure out who is powerful enough to snatch the Matriarch of the South from your own territory, my advice is simple: call the enforcers. Or perhaps admit that your pack’s borders aren’t as secure as you think. Maybe the Nightfang is losing its teeth.”
No sooner had I finished than a familiar, high–pitched screech tore through the receiver.
It was so loud and jagged it nearly made me drop the phone.
“CALL THE ENFORCERS?!”
Loretta.
She must have been hovering over Jensen, her dignity as shredded as her silk blouse.
Even through the distortion of the speaker, her voice was unmistakable.
“I WILL NOT LET THIS GO, NATALIE! DO YOU HEAR ME? YOU ARE A VULGAR, VILE GIRL! YOU WILL APOLOGIZE FOR THIS HUMILIATION! I’LL HAVE THE COUNCIL STRIP YOUR SCRIBE CREDENTIALS!”
I pulled the phone away from my ear, staring at the screen with a mixture of boredom and pity.
I didn’t even blink.
She had been reduced to a wet, coffee–stained mess, and she still thought her threats carried weight.
“Do whatever you want,” I said flatly.
I ended the call and immediately blocked the number.
As for Jensen’s feelings, I couldn’t care less.
But what he’d said a moment ago sparked a thought.
Someone had stuck up for me.
A wave of warmth spread through my chest.
I pulled up my messages and sent a text to the one man who could have helped deliver such judgement.
