Chapter 284 Food Tastes Like Care
Chapter 284 Food Tastes Like Care
Baron’s POV
I had already silenced the initial ring as I prepared to stand up from the ironwood chair.
I needed to step beyond the perimeter lines, away from the sensitive tracking ears of the children and the fated match who held my soul in her hands.
“Is it dangerous?”
Natalie’s voice cut through the low crackle of the wood fire.
I paused mid-motion, my boots frozen against the rug as I looked down at her face.
Natalie had never truly involved herself much in my external military or financial affairs before today.
Throughout our initial alignment in the South, she had always subtly maintained a quiet perimeter, operating under the deeply ingrained belief that we lived in entirely different worlds.
She was a scholar, a Scribe born to trace the sacred histories of the apex lineages, while I was a warlord – the Alpha of the Blackridge Pack, a sovereign who ruled through force and shadow execution cells.
She hadn’t wanted to suffocate our bond or control my movements too tightly, allowing me the freedom to run the border campaigns without her oversight.
‘She worries for us, Raze rumbled deep within my subconscious.
I noticed the intense, focused concern swirling in the gold rings of her irises, the subtle tightening of her fingers around her linen napkin, and despite the grim reports waiting for me on the digital network, I couldn’t help but let out a soft smile.
I reached down, my large palm cupping
her shoulder for a brief, reassuring second to soothe her rising anxiety.
“No real danger, my queen,” I murmured, my voice dropping into a smooth tone.
“Just some routine business matters and administrative logistics to handle across the northern transport routes. You finish eating your rations; I’ll be right back inside the den threshold.
Seeing her shoulders drop slightly as she exhaled a long, silent breath of relief. I finally

turned on my heel and stepped out of the dining room, as I pulled the heavy draperies shut
behind me.
I raised the terminal back to my ear, swiping the secure bypass key to reactivate the line.
“Talk,” I commanded.
“Mr. Baron,” Shauna’s voice came through, rapid and precise.
“Our data teams have mapped the hospital logs from twenty-five years ago. When that human couple was hospitalized, the female went into severe labor complications. The registry explicitly states the man had no tokens, no pack credit, and no money to pay for the surgery.”
I stood perfectly still in the shadows.
“Go on.”
“The distance between that hospital and his village was over twelve miles of dense wilderness. A round trip would have taken hours so the man left, saying he was going to borrow funds. But he never returned to the village.”
Shauna paused.
The sound of keyboard strokes filled the line.
“Yet, exactly fifteen minutes later, he walked back through the hospital doors. He had a leather sack full of cash… He paid for the operation in full.”
My gaze darkened, my hand tightened around the phone.
“So you’re saying,” I ground out, my voice a low, dangerous purr, “the man most likely ran into someone waiting in the dark? Someone less than a mile from the hospital gate, who handed him the currency?”
“Yes, Alpha, that seems to be the case. But we haven’t found solid forensic evidence of the broker yet. The files were surgically scrubbed forty-eight hours after the operation.”
Shauna continued her report, her tone turning grim.
“Also, the child the woman gave birth to… was apparently logged as a stillborn. We macked down the primary surgeon who delivered the baby. Immediately after the surgery, he resigned his credentials, pulled his lineage out of the Southern registry, and moved abroad?
I leaned my shoulder against the dark wood of the door. “Let me guess. A convenient accident?”

“There was a commercial plane crash reported during their migration route, the public obituaries listed their names among the dead. But they missed the boarding call because their youngest child had a sudden upset stomach. They survived. Then, they vanished.”
