Chapter 319 The Midnight Accord
Chapter 319 The Midnight Accord
Natalie’s POV
The moment Baron and I stepped fully into the sitting room, the tension from outside seemed to fall away.
The fire in the massive stone hearth crackled steadily, casting golden light across the room.

The long mahogany dining table had already been prepared for dinner, covered with enough food to feed an army. Rich aromas drifted through the air, mingling with cedarwood, spices, and the familiar scents of the people loved.
For the first time all evening, I felt myself relax.
Nyx had finally settled.
Ever since revealing herself to Baron, she’d been strangely content, stretched lazily behind my ribs like a wolf basking beneath sunlight after a long winter.
The frantic tension she’d carried for weeks had disappeared completely.
There were no more secrets between us now.
No more hiding.
No more fear.
Just certainty.
My fingers remained intertwined with Baron’s as we stepped further into the room.
Immediately, my attention landed on Susie.
My daughter had somehow managed to claim Ruby entirely.
She sat proudly on her grandmother’s lap as though she’d known her all her life instead of only a few hours.
A silver hairbrush rested in one hand while the other disappeared into Ruby’s long silver hair.
The results were… questionable,
“Grandma, don’t move.”
Ruby blinked.
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Good,” Susie said seriously. “Because if you move, it’ll ruin the braid.”
The braid was already ruined.
At least three separate sections of hair were twisted together incorrectly.
Somehow the brush had become trapped halfway through the process, and Susie pepinos?

was creating.
Ruby, meanwhile, looked happier than I’d ever seen her.
A soft laugh escaped her as she allowed Susie to continue her assault on her hairstyle.
For a moment, I simply watched them.

Twenty–five years of believing she’d lost her daughter forever and now she sat beside a roaring fire while her granddaughter attempted to turn her into a warrior princess.
The sight made something ache inside my chest.
Not painfully, just enough to remind me how much we’d all lost.
And how much we’d found again.
“Grandma,” Susie announced suddenly.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“When I’m rich, I’m going to buy you a castle.”
Ruby smiled immediately.
“A castle?”
“The biggest one.”
“How big?”
Susie spread her arms dramatically.
“This big.”
Ruby nodded solemnly.
“Then I’ll make sure it has a room just for you.”
Susie gasped.
“A whole room?”
“A whole wing.”
That earned an excited squeal.
Across the room, Sean sat beside Waylon, and the contrast between them should have looked strange
Instead, it looked natural.
My father sat with his usual calm authority while Sean explained something using a notebook.
by the sketches covering the pages, it involved battle formations.

Of course it did.
Sean pointed at one of the diagrams.
“If they approach from the eastern side, they’ll lose visibility here.”
Waylon leaned closer.
“Why?”
“The wind.”
Sean spoke as though the answer should have been obvious.
“The scent trail changes direction.”
A slow smile crossed my father’s face.
“Interesting.”
Sean immediately launched into a more detailed explanation.
Within minutes, the two of them were discussing routes, terrain, and tactical positioning like veteran commanders instead of grandfather and grandson meeting for the first time.
The sight made me smile.
Baron squeezed my hand lightly.
When I looked up, his gaze was already on me.
The warmth in his eyes immediately made my pulse stumble.”
The bond between us had changed since tonight.
It felt stronger somehow.
As though something that had always stood between us had finally disappeared
“You should stop looking at me like that,” I murmured.
One corner of his mouth lifted.
“Like what?”
I narrowed my eyes.
“You know exactly what.”
“I don’t.”
Liar.
The word echoed through my mind instantly.

His amusement brushed lightly against the bond.
Before I could answer, Flynn appeared carrying a plate large enough to qualify as a public safety concern.
He dropped into a nearby chair with exaggerated exhaustion.
“No one appreciates me.”
Nobody looked at him.
Not one person.
Flynn sighed dramatically.
“See?”
Waylon glanced up.
“You’re eating enough for six people.”
“That’s not the point.”
“It might be.”
“It isn’t.”
Flynn pointed toward Susie.

“Do you know she threatened my breakfast privileges?”
Susie looked up immediately.
“Because you track mud everywhere.”
“I do not.”
“You do.”
“I don’t.”
“You do.”
Ruby started laughing.
Flynn looked betrayed.
“This family has become completely lawless.”
“You’re thirty–six,” Baron said dryly.
“Exactly.”
“I don’t see the problem.”

The entire roum erupted into laughter.
Even Sean smiled.
Flynn looked personally offended for nearly three seconds before returning to his food.
Apparently the crisis had passed.
I moved toward the dining table and poured myself a small glass of wine.
The moment I reached for it, Baron’s hand settled against my lower back.
