Chapter 374 The Ghost Lanes

Chapter 374 The Ghost Lanes

Sharon’s POV

The battered truck lurched violently over another hidden rut, its suspension groaning beneatly the strin as muddy water splashed against the rusted doors.

My father kept both hands locked around the steering wheel, his knuckles white beneath the dim glow of the instrument panel he refused to switch on completely.

We drove without headlights.

Only the pale wash of dawn filtering through the marsh fog gave us enough light to follow the winding road.

Outside, towering reeds bent beneath the freezing wind.

Dead branches scraped across the roof with long, screeching groans that made my mother flinch every single time.

No one spoke.

The truck’s diesel engine rattled loudly enough to betray us if anyone came close, yet somehow the silence inside the cabin felt even louder.

Father finally broke it.

“Nobody touches the dashboard.”

His voice was rough from exhaustion.

“Leave every screen dark. Every indicator. Every radio.”

He glanced toward me.

“If Baron catches even a single light reflection out here…”

“…we’re finished.”

I simply nodded.

The psychiatric drugs hadn’t fully left my system.

Every muscle in my body ached.

My bare feet were streaked with dried blood from walking across the gravel outside the asylum.

My wrists still carried faint bruises from the restraints:

Jensen….

A slow smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

I almost laughed.

Good.

Let him rot there.

My mother noticed the expression before quickly looking away.

She didn’t ask why I was smiling.

Perhaps she already knew.

Perhaps she was afraid of the answer.

I slowly clenched my fist.

Once I reclaimed my wolf…

everything would change.

Natalie could have her glorious reunion.

She could play the perfect daughter of the Nomadic Pack.

She could rebuild kingdoms.

She could become everyone’s precious Scribe.

It didn’t matter.

Because once she helped rebuild our territory…

once she restored the Summers Pack…

once our family’s position became stable again…

I’d reclaim my wolf.

And then…

I’d destroy her with my own hands.

Not quickly.

Not mercifully.

The way she’d taken everything from me…

I’d take everything from her.

Her family.

Her children.

Her happiness.

Her precious mate.

Everything.

The smile on my face widened.

Father interrupted my thoughts.

“What if she refuses?”

The question hung heavily inside the truck.

Mother slowly turned toward me.

“What if Natalie won’t even speak to us?”

I finally lifted my head.

“She will.”

Father frowned.

“How can you be certain?”

“Because Natalie still believes she’s a good person.”

I leaned back against the seat.

“People like her are predictable.”

“They can’t ignore suffering.”

“They forgive.”

“They carry guilt.”

“They always believe there’s something worth saving

I laughed quietly.

“That’s exactly why she’ll become useful.

Mother’s expression shifted uneasily.

“If she agrees to protect us,” Father said carefully, our territory survives.”

“It survives because she’ll make it survive.”

I nodded.

“She has the bloodline, the influence… everything we’ve lost.”

Father’s grip tightened around the wheel.

“And afterward?”

I looked out into the endless fog.

“Afterward…”

“We no longer need her.”

The truck rolled deeper into the marsh.

Neither of my parents answered.

Neither of them objected.

BARON’S POV

The engine beneath me screamed like a wounded beast.

Cold wind lashed against my face, carrying the scent of rain, diesel, and churned marshland.

They were close.

I could feel it.

Forty rogue riders thundered behind me, their engines merging into one relentless roar that echoed across the valleys.

They had stripped every identifying mark from their machines before leaving Blackridge.

Only the order I had given.

Find the Summers family.

Stop them before they reached Natalie.

My earpiece crackled.

“Alpha.”

Renee’s voice broke through the wind.

“The marsh roads continue interfering with satellite positioning.”

“Give me something.”

“We’re receiving scattered heat signatures, but none are stable enough to confirm.

My jaw tightened.

“Damn it.”

I twisted the throttle harder.

The motorcycle surged forward.

Trees blurred past.

Loose rocks bounced beneath the tires.

The front wheel briefly left the ground before crashing back onto the trail.

I didn’t slow.

I couldn’t.

Every second that passed widened the gap between me and the people hunting my family.

Sean.

Susie.

The image of my children flashed through my mind.

Sean trying so hard to be brave.

Susie clutching her stuffed wolf every night before sleeping.

My chest tightened painfully.

They’d already been dragged through enough because of the lies I’d told.

I wasn’t going to let Sharon anywhere near them.

Not ever again.

Rence.”

“I’m here.”

“Expand the search.

“We already have every available drone airborne

“Then launch the emergency reserve

A brief pause followed.

“The reserve drones aren’t registered.”

“I know.”

“If the Council discovers you’ve deployed them-”

“I don’t care.”

My voice came out colder than the mountain air.

“If protecting my family means starting another war…”

“…then let them call it war.”

The convoy behind me accelerated immediately.

The display mounted beside my handlebars flashed once.

Then twice.

Rence spoke immediately.

“I’ve got something.”

I straightened.

“What?”

“A thermal spike.”

“Location?”

“Three kilometers ahead.”

“Is it them?”

“I’m not certain.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because…

She hesitated.

“The temperature is dropping instead of rising.”

That made no sense.

Heat signatures didn’t lower surrounding temperatures.

Unless…

My heart skipped.

“Natalie.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Renee’s voice grew quieter.

“I believe she’s there.”

My grip tightened.

A curse escaped my lips.

“Damn it, Natalie…”

Why?

Why would she walk toward the people who had destroyed her life?

Unless…

No.

I knew that look in her eyes before she left.

She wasn’t going to forgive them.

She wanted answers.

Justice.

Closure.

Maybe all three.

But the Summers….

They was unpredictable.

I couldn’t allow that,

“Rence.”

“Yes, Alpha?”

“Send every available rider to the northern intersection.”

“Every rider?”

“Every one.”

“What about your flank?”

“I don’t need one.”

“Alpha-”

“My wife and children do.”

For the first time since leaving Blackridge…

Renee didn’t argue.

“Understood.”

Within seconds, engines behind me shifted formation.

Half the convoy peeled away, disappearing through parallel trails as they raced toward the intersection from another direction.

I remained on the main road.

Alone.

The bike screamed beneath me.

The wind howled louder.

Somewhere ahead…

Natalie was driving toward the people who had broken her.

And somewhere between us…

The Summers were smiling, believing her plan would work.
