Chapter 377 The Trap On The Ridge
Chapter 377 The Trap On The Ridge
Yvonne’s POV
+5 Free Cecil
I rerouted the signal through three separate encryption loops before bouncing it off one of the abandoned Southern Council satellites.
Still nothing.
“…Impossible.”
The words escaped beneath my breath.
For nearly three minutes, an unknown frequency had been bleeding across our northern surveillance network, interfering with every scanner under my control.
Every diagnostic returned the same impossible result.
Origin: Unknown. Signal Strength: Undefined. Tracking Source: Null.
No signal simply appeared out of nowhere. Someone wanted me to notice it.
A chill crawled down my spine.
I leaned closer to the monitor, manually opening another tracing program. “Come on…”
The software processed for several seconds before the screen suddenly froze.
Every monitor inside the compartment flickered simultaneously.
The overhead lights dimmed.
Then everything went black.
My heartbeat stumbled.
The entire workstation should have triggered its emergency backup protocol immediately, yet nothing happened. For one endless second, I stared into the darkness.
Then a single line of pale white text slowly materialized across the center monitor.
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR BLOOD. COME ALONE.
My breathing slowed.
Another sentence appeared beneath it.
“UNPLUG YOUR TRACKER
My fingers hovered motionlessly above the keyboard

A third line followed.
THE LEDGER OF YOUR TRUE LINEAGE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU
Every muscle in my body locked.
Blood. Lineage. The two words echoed inside my head like distant thunder.
I had spent my entire life without either.
Everyone else belonged somewhere. Natalie had finally found her biological parents.
Flynn had discovered his sister. Even Baron carried generations of history behind his game.
But me? I was a ghost with a borrowed identity.
I swallowed hard.
Whoever sent this message knew exactly where to strike. Logic screamed that it was a trap. Instinct whispered something else.
What if it wasn’t?
The cursor blinked again. A final message appeared.
*GRANITE BASIN.*
COME BEFORE THE LEDGER CLOSES FOREVER.*
The screen immediately went dark. My reflection stared back at me from the black glass.
I sat frozen for several long moments.
Natalie would tell me not to go. Waylon would deploy scouts. Ruby would insist on surrounding the area Renee would trace the signal. All of them would protect me.
And if this truly was my only chance… they would scare whoever sent it away.
I squeezed my eyes shut. “I just need answers.”
The whisper barely reached my own cars.
Slowly, I reached beneath the sleeve of my jacket toward the small silver transponder embedded beneath the skin of my wrist. Its blue tracking light blinked steadily.
One sharp pull
Pain exploded through my arm
The tiny device tore free with a spray of sparks, clattering onto the metal floor beside my boot.

Immediately the screen displayed: “SIGNAL LOST.
I grabbed my jacket, slipped my knife into its sheath, and quietly eased open the communications hatch
Keeping close to the shadows between the armored transports, I disappeared into the rolling curtain of gray fog without looking back.
The mountain swallowed sound.
The farther I moved, the thicker the fog became, wrapping itself around the towering pines.
Damp air clung to my skin, soaking through my jacket until the cold settled deep inside my bones.
The narrow trail beneath my boots was little more than fractured granite and loose gravel, forcing me to watch every step as I climbed higher into the basin.
I checked the small compass strapped to my wrist. The needle spun once. Twice. Then stopped altogether
“…Great.”
Even the compass had surrendered. I slipped it back beneath my sleeve and continued walking.
The message hadn’t included coordinates beyond a single destination.
Granite Basin. It was enough. Whoever had sent it knew I would come.
That realization should have sent me running back to the convoy. Instead, it pushed me forward.
Every unanswered question I’d carried since childhood weighed heavily on my shoulders. Who were my parents? Why had every official record before the age of six disappeared? Why had no one ever come looking for me?
The Blackridge Pack had become my family, but even among them. I had always been the outsider.
Natalie had finally found the people whose blood ran through her veins.
I belonged nowhere.
Not unless the person waiting somewhere beyond this fog was telling the truth.
Moss covered the stone walls, while ancient pine roots twisted across the ground like the ribs of some forgotten beast.
Every instinct I possessed screamed that I wasn’t alone anymore.
1 stopped walking
Silence answered.

No footsteps.
No voices.
No movement. Only the distant drip of melting frost somewhere deeper inside the rocks.
I exhaled slowly. “You’re imagining things.”
I took another step. Then another.
“Snap.”
The unmistakable crack of a dry branch echoed behind me.
Every muscle in my body locked.
Someone was there.
Without thinking, I spun around, my hand flying to the tactical knife at my hip.
The blade slid free with a sharp metallic whisper, its polished edge catching the pale light filtering through the mist.
“Who’s there?” I demanded.
No answer.

The fog rolled lazily between the trees. My heartbeat thundered against my ribs.
“I know you’re watching me.”
Still nothing.
For several long seconds, the world remained frozen.
Then a tall silhouette emerged from the drifting fog.
One step.
Then another
He walked without urgency, his heavy boots barely making a sound against the gravel.
A dark execution cloak hung from his broad shoulders, concealing most of his frame, while a tactical rifle rested casually across one arm as though it weighed nothing at all.
His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of the hood. Until he stopped barely three meters away
The wind shifted. The hood slipped back.
Tine ceased to exist.

My fingers loosened around the knife. My lungs forgot how to breathe.
He was young. Perhaps only a few years older than me.
Dark hair brushed the collar of his cloak, and sharp features gave his face a quiet severity that wasn’t cruel, merely disciplined.
But it was his eyes that rooted me to the spot.
Amber. Bright. Burning.
The instant our gazes collided, something inside me shattered.
Heat erupted beneath my skin.
Not ordinary warmth… This was wildfire.
It exploded through every vein in my body, racing toward my heart before bursting outward in an overwhelming wave that stole every coherent thought from my mind.
My knees nearly buckled.
Behind my ribs, my wolf threw back her head and released a deafening howl of recognition.
Every instinct I possessed reached toward the stranger before me with desperate certainty.
“Mine.*
The invisible thread snapped into existence between us with such force that I physically staggered.
Across from me, the stranger froze.
His expression fractured.
For the briefest heartbeat, raw shock crossed his face. His fingers tightened around the rifle before abruptly going slack. His breathing became uneven.
He felt it too.
His wolf had recognized me.
Neither of us spoke. We simply stared at one another as the impossible settled between us.
Fated mates
Of all the people hidden within these mountains… of all the paths fate could have woven it had led me here, Led me to him.
“You” I whispered, barely recognizing my own volor.
He swallowed.

The muscles dong his jaw Sexed. For one fleeting serond, I thought he might step toward me
Ingrad, everything changed.
The warmth vanished from his eyes. A cold wall slammed into place behind them.
His posture straightened. His breathing steadied. The soldier returned.
“No.” he murmured almost to himself. His voice carried unmistakable regret. “This isn’t how it was supposed to happen
Confusion twisted through me. “What are you talking about?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, his gaze lingered on my face with a strange mixture of longing and Almost apology
Tm sorry,” he said quietly.
Before I could react, he disappeared.
sorrow
My eyes widened. One moment he stood several meters away. The next, he was directly in front of me. Fast. Far too fast.
Instinct screamed at me to defend myself. I raised my knife.
He caught my wrist effortlessly. His grip was firm but strangely careful, as though he didn’t want to hurt
me
Our eyes met again. For the briefest instant, the mate bond flared violently between us.
Pain crossed his features. He was fighting it. Fighting me.
Tm truly sorry,” he whispered.
Then he twisted the rifle in one smooth motion. The heavy iron stock came crashing toward the side of my head. I tried to duck
Too late.
*Boom
Agony exploded across my temple. A blinding flash of white swallowed my vision. The knife slipped from my fingers. The world tilted violently beneath my feet.
1 heard someone catch me before I struck the ground. Strong arms. Steady. Careful
Forgive me, the stranger’s voice echoed somewhere far away, thick with restrained anguish.
The last thing I felt was his hand gently brushing loose strands of hair away from my face.
Then darkness consigned everything.
