“Baron, listen to me.” Natalie’s voice was a frantic, raspy whisper. “I can try designing with other silvers. I can even try to get the charm from the black market; I don’t care. But don’t go to the Witch Doctor for me! That man is insane!
I leaned against the cold wall, my thumb tracing the edge of the phone. I could hear the fast rhythm of her heartbeat; she was terrified. Not for herself but for me.
No one had ever cared for me in such a way…
Natalie remembered this place… Of course, she remembered the price she’d paid five ago when she came here to beg for a man who didn’t deserve her.
years
She had walked into my theater a desperate girl and offered up her own rib just to keep Jensen Luke’s heart beating.
She hadn’t known then that the man behind the silver mask was the same man she was talking to now. To her, the Witch Doctor was a monster who took pieces of people, and she wasn’t wrong.
“Baron, you have so many people depending on you,” she pleaded, her voice cracking. “You really don’t need to do this for me, just being alive is already enough. Please, come back now!”
She was trying to convince me that her talent and her soul weren’t worth the risk. She still didn’t realize that the “madman” she feared was the only one who had ever truly seen her value.
I would do anything to get back your soul and make you whole again, I wanted to say, but I kept quiet.
“Trust me,” I said, my voice dropping into a low, steady vibration. “The Witch Doctor can’t hurt me.”
“No! He really is a madman! Baron, please come back, will you? I don’t know anyone here. I… I miss you.”
I felt the world stop; I felt my hand clench around the phone so hard the casing groaned.
Those last three words hit me with more force than the warehouse explosion.
I miss you… I’ve never been told that.
I wasn’t a man people missed, I was a man people feared. But hearing her say that made

something turn within me, and I could feel Raze pacing happily in my head.
‘She misses us… She misses us‘ he repeated over and over again.
“Say that last part again,” I commanded.
My voice was hoarse with excitement; what if we had misheard her?

I waited, on the other end, I heard her sharp intake of breath. She probably didn’t even understand why I was being so good to her. She didn’t realize that when she stepped into my world, she’d rewritten the laws of my gravity.
From the moment I saw her five years ago at that black market, I had wanted her.
“Baron, please… come back. I miss you.”
Her voice was a jagged ruin, but to me, it was the sweetest music I’d ever heard. It filled the hollowed–out parts of my soul with a dangerous, golden light.
“All right,” I said, my eyes burning with a sudden sharp joy. “I’ll come back tomorrow.”
I hung up before she could argue further.
She misses me. The thought was an intoxicant; I needed to get back to her. But before I could go back to being Baron, I had to finish being the witch doctor.
I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a surgical scalpel. I rolled the cold steel between my fingers… Natalie wanted me to stay away from the madman. She didn’t realize she was talking to him.
I strode out of the tunnels and into a shop that looked like a thousand other beaten–up storefronts. But once the biometric scanner recognized my thumbprint, the back wall slid open with a hiss.
The interior was a cathedral of glass and stainless steel—the most advanced surgical suite in the world. This was my sanctuary… this was where the Witch Doctor was born.
I went upstairs and stripped off my coat; I caught my reflection in the floor–to–ceiling mirror. My chest was a map of old violence.
I touched the long, jagged scar that ran across my ribs–a reminder from a night years ago when I should have died.
That scar was a reminder that I was already a dead man walking; I had nothing to fear.
I walked over to the cabinet and pulled out the ritual pigments and began to paint.
