I stood over Natalie, the lights reflecting off the polished steel of the surgical trays.

My gloves snapped into place with a sharp, clinical sound.

She was soaked in blood, the surgical sites where I had treated her burns had turned a dark, angry purplesepsis was setting in, and it was moving with a lethal speed that defied every medical protocol I knew.

You really can’t go one day without making a mess, can you?I whispered, my voice a jagged ruin in the quiet room. You knew you shouldn’t move; why did you get up?

I knew she couldn’t hear me, but the anger was the only thing keeping the grief from paralyzing my hands.

I looked at her right handthe hand that had once sketched designs of such grace it made my soul ache.

Now, it was blackened, the bones shattered during the fire, and the flesh ravaged by the infection. It was the hand that had crafted the silver cufflinks I now wore on my own wrists.

With a heavy sigh, I picked up the scalpel. This was delicate work, and normally, I would have a team of surgeons assisting, but I couldn’t trust themnot today.

Today, the only hands allowed to touch her were mine.

It took over two hours of agonizing precision to restore the dead tissue and flush the toxins from her system.

By the time I finished the initial cleaning, my sterile suit was drenched in cold sweat, the fabric sticking to my back like a second

skin.

I thought the worst had passeduntil the heart monitor began to scream.

Natalie’s body began to convulse, her back arching off the table in a violent, tetanic spasm. White foam bubbled at the corners of her mouth, and her eye’s rolled back into her head.

My blood turned to ice.

My eyes sharpened, my wolf, Raze, howling in the back of my mind, demanding I tear apart whatever was hurting her.

I grabbed her jaw, holding her steady as I drew a blood sample for immediate analysis. When the toxin markers flashed on the screen seconds later, a terrifying coldness flooded my mind.

Poison.

Someone had dared to introduce a toxin into her system. Someone inside my house, someone I had trusted with the security of my sanctuary, had tried to finish the job Jensen and his mate started.

There was no time for an IV drip to workthe poison was moving too fast, seeking her heart.

I crushed an antidote vial, the glass cutting into my palm through the glove, but I didn’t even mind. I tried to administer it to her directly, but her jaw was locked in a death grip, her body rejecting the medicine in its panicked state.

I narrowed my eyes, and without a second thought, I lifted the vial to my own lips, drank the bitter, metallic fluid, and leaned down.

1 sealed her mouth with mine.

I only felt life fading from her as I forced her lips open with my own, pouring the antidote and my own breath down her throat.

I felt her reflexively swallow, her throat working against mine. I stayed there, my mouth pressed to hers, willing my own strength, my own vitality, into her broken body.

As I finally pulled back, I saw a single tear slide from the corner of her eye. It streaked across her burned skin.

It twisted something in my chest so hard I thought my own heart might stop.

Natalie, stay alive,I rasped, my voice hoarse and breaking. You still owe me. No matter what happens, I’m here. Trust me- everything will be okay.

I watched the monitor as the toxin levels were finally decreasing.

I exhaled a breath I felt like I’d been holding for hours. I couldn’t delay the skin grafts any longer; her body was too compromised to wait. But first, I had to save her broken hands and then her soul.

I immersed myself in the work, lost the passage of time as I moved from the infection to the intricate reconstruction of her shattered bones.

Raze stayed quiet, watching through my eyes, his predatory instincts focused entirely on the survival of our mate.

Ten hours later, the automatic doors hissed open, and I emerged from the operating room. My eyes were bloodshot, my body stiff with tiredness.

Yvonne was waiting in the hall; she had just returned from her punishment, her clothes soaked in blood, her face a mask of pale agony.

She didn’t offer a word of complaint; she was a soldier of the pack, and she knew the price of failure. She rushed up to me the moment she saw me.

Alphahow is she? Please tell me she’s alive.”

I gave her a long, searching look. The iron

ent of blood on her made it clear she had taken her lashes without a single plea for mercy. Change your clothes,I said, my voice flat. Clean yourself up, go in, and look after her. This time, you are not to leave her sidenot even for a second. If she so much as sighs, I want to know.

Yes, sir!Yvonne’s eyes welled with tears as she fled toward the washrooms.

Shauna immediately handed me a glass of water. I drank it in one go, the cool liquid barely touching the fire in my throat.

My gaze then drifted to Finn, who was standing further down the hall.

BaronI know I ran my mouth,Finn stammered, backing away instinctively as I approached. But you already slapped me. You’re not going to punish me more, are you?

He was tremblingwell, he was right to be afraid. I saw the way he looked at the door, the way his pulse throbbed in his neck.

Shauna, sensing the shift in the air, hurried to intervene. Baron, Finn may have a foul mouth, but he’d never dare lay a hand on Natalie. He’s been with us too long.
