Chapter 69 Secrets, Traces, And Traps
Susie’s POV
“Huh? Isn’t Mommy the one who has a secret to tell me?”
I tilted my head, letting my eyes go wide and round.

It was my “innocent face“-the one that made the guards at the estate melt and made Daddy give me extra sweets before dinner.
I watched Mommy carefully as she let out an awkward laugh that seemed to catch in her throat, making her wince at the movement.
“But I don’t really have any secrets.”
Mommy looked at me with a mix of something like confusion and fear; she had never interacted with children before–I could tell by the way she watched me.
Looking at my face, Mommy suddenly looked a little guilty, as if not having a secret to share with me was a crime she had committed.
She bit her lip, then smiled gently, her eyes shimmering with a sudden thought.
“Then how about I tell you another name of mine?” She whispered, placing her hands on her lips in a silent signal.
“Yay! Does Sean know?” My eyes lit up. I loved having things Sean didn’t have yet.
Mommy shook her head, her voice a fragile thread. “I haven’t even met your brother yet.”
“Perfect! Mommy, you can’t tell Sean, okay? This is just bet the two of us.”
I leaned over the high railing of the hospital bed, my voice dropping to match her whisper.
Mommy nodded, looking like she wanted to laugh at my silliness. “I have a name called ‘the Keeper.”
“Whoa, Mommy has a different name! Can I have one too someday?”
“Of course.”
I really, really liked Mommy. For a second, I saw her try to sit up, her fingers twitching as if she wanted to pull me into a big hug, but her body wouldn’t let her.
She looked frustrated and tired, her strength fading fast.
I noticed the

Mommy’s face transformed; it was like she was picturing the same image I was. “Okay. I promise… No. matter how hard it is, Mommy will get better and take you out to play”
“Pinkie promise!”
I lifted my smallest finger.
She hesitated, then managed to curl hers around mine.
“Pinkie promise,” she repeated.
I beamed at her, gave her a little wave, and skipped out of the room.
I looked at the chair next to the door where Yvonne was still slumped, her chin tucked into her chest, her breathing rhythmic and heavy.
When I’d walked in earlier, Yvonne had been so focused on her guilt and her phone that she hadn’t noticed me swap her bottled water.
A little bit of the liquid Dad gave Yvonne to give Mommy.
I leaned over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Yvonne’s ear. She was good at her job according to Daddy. I hope she will not let anything happen to Mommy.
I hurried back to my bedroom, locked the door, and pulled out my tablet.
Mommy had said her name was the Keeper, but I knew there was more to it. I’d heard Dad call someone
that.
Had it been Mommy then?
What took her so long to come back?
I tapped my fingers across the screen, searching for the name “The Keeper.”
There wasn’t much–no accident reports, no hospital records that match the fire that burnt her… It was like it never happened.
I bit my lip and ran a deeper trace… It didn’t take long to find a computer registered under that name. It wasn’t here in the pack; it was all the way in another pack called Nightfang pack, inside a place called the pack office.
After some trials and errors, I was able to access the documents from the pack.
And when the files opened, I gasped.
The computer was

I even discovered an old graduation photo of her tucked inside a hidden drive… She was laughing, her face perfect and full of life, she looked like me.
“Mommy’s a design genius!” I whispered, my heart swelling with pride.
I was completely absorbed, admiring every single one of my mommy’s past creations.
The transcripts were beautiful and well written.
Looking back at the picture, I felt like I was finally meeting the woman she was before the fire took her voice and her skin.
“This is amazing…
I just stared at the graduation photo again.
This was the woman she had been before the fire.
What happened to you?
Why did they erase you?
