Chapter 83 A Death On The Road
Baron’s POV
“But Baron…” Natalie started but was interrupted as Shauna banged on the door.
She stood in the doorway, her uniform disheveled and her face a mask of grief and something like fear.
My voice came low and steady, “what happened, Shauna?”

Shauna swallowed hard, a stray tear carving a path through the dust on her cheek. “Yvonne… she was in a car accident on the way to the National Hotel. She died at the scene, and by the time the medics reached her… it was already too late.”
The words hit the room like a physical explosion as I felt Natalie flinch beside me.
How could this be? Just an hour ago, that girl was the sun in this sterile wing. She was the one who had promised to be Natalie’s blood, the one whose sacrifice was supposed to bridge the gap between a broken past and a mended future.
She convinced me to let her go alone… she wanted to settle things with Finn without my involvement.
Why did I let her go?
My eyes turned darker, my inner wolf pacing behind my ribs, snarling at me. “She was driving herself?”
“Yes,” Shauna whispered, her voice trembling.
“And the driver who hit her?”
“He’s in custody… a human. The traffic police have cordoned off the scene, but we have our own people on the perimeter. We’ll have the forensics soon.”
I glanced at Natalie and saw the sheer agony in her eyes. She just lost the only family member she could have had.
I wanted to stay, to be the anchor she needed while the world fell apart, but I couldn’t. “Natalie, I know you’re hurting… but I need to deal with this. I need to see her.”
“Go,” she managed to gasp, her voice a jagged wreck of its former self. “Don’t worry about me. Just… find out why.”
She gripped the edge of the bed so tightly her knuckles turned a ghostly white.
I gave a sharp signal and followed Shauna out.
The moment the doors hissed shut behind us, my composure fractured.
I hadn’t even announced her as my sister yet she died as nothing more than an ordinary pack member.
“Where’s Finn?” I growled at Shauna.
“He… he went out early, Baron. He said he had a lead on the foreign pack’s movements but he hasn’t returned yet”
“Call him back… Now,” I commanded.
Shauna didn’t hesitate as she dialed the number on speaker.

Finn picked up on the third ring, sounding puzzled, his voice filtered through the static of a moving car. “Shauna? What is it? I’m nearly at the pack.”
“Come back immediately,” Shauna said, her voice finally breaking. “Yvonne’s had an accident… A bad one.”
Yvonne had grown up before all our eyes. She wasn’t just a subordinate; she was the little sister of the entire Blackthorn Pack.
When Phantom had first joined the organization, she had brought that wide–eyed girl with her, refusing to let her rot in the orphanage. After Yvonne was scarred in that revenge–driven crash years ago, we had all taken turns looking after her. She was our sunshine.
My sister.
On the other end of the line, there was a deafening silence. Then, the sound of a vehicle swerving. “What happened to Yvonne?” Finn’s voice was a panicked rasp.
“She’s gone, Finn.”
The line went dead.
By the time I reached the morgue at the edge of the pack, a body lay nearby, covered by a white sheet that was already stained
crimson.
The human police had already confirmed it.
Yvonne was dead.
The driver had been a drunk, stepping out of a local tavern and straight into the driver’s seat.
He had admitted fault immediately, sobbing about a missed light and a blurred windshield.
But I knew deep down… I didn’t believe in coincidences.
A drunk driver hitting a reinforced Pack vehicle with enough precision to kill a werewolf instantly? It was impossible.
Yet no matter how my interrogators pressed, the driver repeated the same line – it was his fault, his alone.
Shauna, consumed by a feral fury, had struck the man across the face in front of the officers.
It was an assault that led to her being taken away for twenty–four hours‘ detention. I let it happen; she needed the walls of a cell to contain the wolf inside her before she committed a massacre.
When Finn finally arrived, the whole truth was laid out for him. He stared blankly at the body in the corner, his eyes wide and hollow.
“This… how?” he whispered, his voice failing him. “Is Yvonne forever bound to car accidents?”
Once, a crash had stolen her face. Now, another had stolen her life.
Finn sank down before her, tears burning his eyes until they turned a bloodshot red.
He collapsed forward, his fists pressed to the floor, sobbing like a child who had lost his only parent.

My own eyes burned with anger as the scent in the room suddenly changed from Finn’s usual scent to one with a metallic tong that
