I had squeezed my eyes shut, praying to a god I didn’t believe in, and pulled.
The sound was sickening as blood gushed out the instant the blade was free, hot splatters painting my face and stinging my eyes.
The copper taste of it hit my tongue, and for a second, the world turned white.
“Ah!” The scream tore through my throat.
“Shut up!” The man’s voice was a sharp, growl that cut through my scream.
Even with a hole in his chest, his authority was absolute. “Do you want the police here? Do you want to explain why a child is standing over a corpse with a knife? Press the wound! Now grab the medicine from my inner pocket!”
‘I’m not a child,‘ I wanted to snap but the words died in my throat.”
I moved like a puppet as I pressed down my hand on the hole in his chest.
With my other hand, I fumbled frantically inside his heavy coat, my fingers going through the silk lining until they found a small glass vial.
I knew one thing with absolute, terrifying clarity; I couldn’t get tangled in a scandal.
I was a Summers.
I was the girl who had run away to prove she could be a master transcriber, the one who her parents thought was on a school trip.
If I was dragged into a police station, if my name appeared in a report next to a stabbing in a back alley, the journey would be over
My years of training would be wasted, and my parents‘ expectations would shatter into a million pieces that they would use to cut me for the rest of my life.
So I did as the dying man said.
I forced the medicine into his mouth and kept my weight on the wound, watching the way his jaw clenched in agony.
Gradually, the frantic pulsing slowed.
The bleeding slowed but the sight of his torn flesh left me shaking in a way that felt like a seizure
I collapsed back onto the wet stones, panting hard.
The man went still.
“H–hey.” I stammered, my voice breaking. I stared at his face, which was barely moving in the moordight D. nt pau dare something! You can’t die yet! Please!”

My heart leapt into my throat.
Ooh shit.
He was dead.
I had killed him.
Or the knife had.

Either way, I was standing over a body.
Panic took the wheel as I turned and bolted toward the alley.
But after only three steps, I stopped. A sob caught in my throat… I couldn’t just leave him with nothing.
With a whimper of pure desperation, I spun back. I reached into my satchel and threw my wallet and my cheap travel phone beside him; the only things I had that could buy him a chance or a phone call if he woke up.
“You promised,” I whispered shakily. “We never met. You’re a ghost, and I was never here.”
Then I ran for my life, never looking back.
By the time I staggered into my hostel room, a fever was already brewing.
I collapsed on the floor, the copper scent of the alley still clinging to my hair.
The archive research, the competition for the translation grant… it all went on without me while I lay in a delirious sweat.
When I finally returned home, pale and hollow–eyed, my parents didn’t ask about my health.
They scolded me harshly for lying and being a disgrace to the family.
If only they knew the night I had.
I locked the memory away so deep that I became the Natalie who didn’t remember the blood on her hands.
Until now.
Back in the villa, the present rushed in like a wave.
My gaze locked onto the faint scar that peeked out from the collar of Baron’s shirt.
My vision blurred as the two images; the dying man in the rain and the Alpha standing before me slid into pertant alignment.

Shauna’s eyes went wide, her medical tablet nearly slipping from her hands.
Sean and Susie, who had been hovering near the door, gawked at me in stunned silence.
Then, realizing they were seeing more of their father than they usually did, they both slapped their hands over their eyes thoug their tiny fingers left just enough of a gap to peek through.
Baron blinked, momentarily caught off guard by my sudden brazenness.
Then, his chest rumbled. A low, dark chuckle vibrated through the air.
“So eager, Natalie?” he teased, his voice dropping into that deep tone that always made my toes curl. “But sweetheart, your body still healing. It’s not ready for… anything too vigorous just yet. We have time.”
I froze, my fingers still tangled in the ruins of his expensive silk shirt. I looked down and saw his broad chest, dominated by the very scar I had been looking for; a thick, silver mark right over his heart. Then I looked at the children.
I flushed a deep crimson, realizing exactly how the scene must have looked to anyone else.
“Bargn! Don’t talk nonsense!” I fumbled, trying to pull the fabric back together, only to realize I had ripped half the buttons clean away.
There was no closing it.
Mortified, I spun away from him, my face feeling like it was literally on fire.
Shauna coughed discreetly into her hand, her laugh impossible to contain. “Ahem. Perhaps I should go check on the tonic for Yvonne. This is… quite a lively recovery session.”
The children giggled behind their hands, and I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole.
1 stammered, my words tripping over each other, “I just… I just wanted to see the scar. You–you’re that bastard! The one from the archives! You’re the one who forced me to pull the knife, aren’t you?”
Baron stepped toward me, his presence suddenly feeling like a warm embrace.
He caught my shoulders, his large hands warm through my thin hospital gown. When I looked up, his eyes were bright with
“You remembered,” he said softly.
“…Yes,” I whispered, my anger melting into a strange confusion. “I remembered everything”
His grin lit up the room, making him look years younger.
“If not for the money and that phone you dropped in the dirt, Natalie, I might not have survived the night. FALAS COO WANDA DO and the men hunting me were closing in. That ‘trash‘ you left behind paid for the bribe that got me to a safe house you didn’t just help me. You saved my life.”
“I was forced to!” I countered. “Because of you. I missed my entre research window I got scolded bad to dreỤ spent years thinking) was a failure because i came home empty handed

the shaking hands. But back then, I was a ghost myself. I was too weak to approach you, too afraid that dragging you into my bloody world would only finish what that knife started.”
He went quiet for a moment, his gaze darkening. “By the time I had enough power to protect you, by the time I was the Alpha of the pack… you were already with Jensen. You were blindly devoted to a man who didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as you.”
He let out a sharp, jagged breath. “I wanted Jensen gone from existence but I knew… I knew that if I killed him then, you would only hate me. So I left, hoping a day would come where we’ll be together again and I get to thank you for saving my life.”
Baron pulled me close, his arms wrapping around me with a strength that felt like a fortress.
He held me as if he were trying to fuse our souls together, his heart beating a steady, powerful rhythm against mine.
“I’m not letting go this time,” he whispered into my hair. “Never again.”
