The pending came again, harder this time, accompanied by voices shouting through the heavy wooden door. “FBI! Open wy. Vir have a WATTA
Lucke’s blood turned to see. She wrapped her silk robe around herself with sifaxing hands, watching Alexander move through their bedroom with terrible calm. Like a man who had prepared himself for this moment.
“May here, he told her, but Lucia was already following him toward the stairs.
I’m not leaving you alone with this”
They reached the front door together just as Lena appeared at the top of the staircase, her face pale with confusion and fear. “Dad? What’s happening?
“Go back to your room, sweetheart, Alexander called up to her. “Everything will be fine.
But nothing about this felt fine. Through the frosted glass panels beside the door, Lucía could see dark shapes moving outside Multiple cars. Multiple agents. This wasn’t a simple inquiry. This was a full–scale raid.
Alexander opened the door to reveal siz federal agents in dark suits and bulletproof vests. The woman in front held up a badge and an official document.
“Agent Sarah Chen, FBI Financial Crimes Division. We have a warrant to search these premises in connection with an ongoing investigation into money laundering and terrorism financing
The words hit Lucia like physical blows. Money laundering. Terrorism financing. The accusations were so serious, so devastating, that she felt dizzy just hearing them spoken aloud.
“May I see the warrant?” Alexander asked, his voice steady despite the circumstances.

Agent Chen handed him the papers. As Alexander read through them, more agents moved past him into the house. Lucia watched in horror as strangers invaded their home, their sanctuary, the place where they had made love as newlyweds just hours before
“This warrant covers all electronic devices, financial records, business documents, and correspondence,” Agent Chen explained. “You have the right to have your attorney present during the search.”
“My attorney is already on his way, Alexander replied, still reading through the legal documents.
Lucia moved closer to him, needing to feel his warmth, his strength, in the face of this nightmare. But Alexander felt distant, controlled, like he was holding himself together through sheer force of will.
What exactly are you looking for? Lucia asked Agent Chen, her voice sharper than she intended.
“Meam. I can’t discuss the specifics of an ongoing investigation. But I can tell you that we have evidence suggesting serious

nancial crimes involving international money transfers and terrorist organizations.”
“That’s impossible,” Lucia said immediately. “My husband would never.”
“Mrs. Kane,” Agent Chen interrupted gently, “I understand this is difficult. But it’s best if you and your family stay out of our way while we conduct the search”
For the next four hours, Lucia watched federal agents tear through their life together. They carried out computers, tablets, phones, any device that might contain electronic evidence. They photographed documents from Alexander’s home office. They bagged and labeled personal items that held no meaning to strangers but represented years of memories to the people who lived there.
Lena sat huddled next to Lucia on the living room couch, tears streaming down her face as she watched agents catalog her father’s possessions. “This is all wrong,” she whispered. “Dad isn’t a criminal. How can they think he’s a criminal?”
Lucia had no answer. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare that grew more surreal by the hour. Yesterday she had been a glowing bride. Today she was the wife of a man accused of financing terrorism.
Alexander stood by the window in his study, watching agents dismantle his business files. His lawyer, David Morrison, had arrived an hour into the search and was now reviewing every item the agents wanted to seize.
“This is excessive,” Morrison kept saying. “You’re taking personal family photos. Recipe cards. Children’s artwork. None of this has anything to do with financial crimes.”
“We’ll determine what’s relevant,” Agent Chen replied each time.
By ten AM, news vans had begun gathering outside the mansion gates. Reporters with cameras and microphones pressed against the iron bars, trying to capture images of the federal raid in progress. Lucia watched them through the window, her stomach churning with humiliation.
“How did they know?” she asked Alexander during a brief moment when the agents were focused on another room. “How did the media find out so quickly?”
Alexander’s jaw tightened. “Someone tipped them off. Someone wanted to make sure this was as public and damaging as possible.”
The implication hung between them. Marco. This had Marco’s fingerprints all over it. The timing, the media attention, the way it was designed to destroy Alexander’s reputation in the most humiliating way possible.
At noon, the agents began loading boxes of seized materials into their vehicles. Lucia counted them through the window. Thirty–seven boxes of documents, twelve computer devices, hundreds of photographs and personal items that might never
r be returned.
Agent Chen approached Alexander with a final document. “Mr. Kane, you’re not under arrest at this time. But I strongly advise you not to leave the country while this investigation is ongoing.”
“I understand.”
“And Mr. Kane? If you have any information that might help us understand these financial transactions, now would be a good time to share it.”
Alexander looked directly into the agent’s eyes. “I have nothing to hide because I’ve done nothing wrong. Every transaction you’ll find in those records has been legal, documented, and properly reported.”
“We’ll see.”
After the agents left, the mansion felt violated and empty. Rooms that had been filled with warmth and love now looked cold
