Chapter 145
Chapter 145
The car pulled into the circular driveway, and Lucia could see warm light spilling from every window of the house. Through the large front windows, she spotted shadows moving back and forth. Pacing figures that told her everything she needed to know about the state of mind inside.
The driver opened her door, and she stepped out into the cool night air. Her legs felt unsteady after the confrontation with Marco, but her resolve had never been stronger. The sound of her heels on the stone walkway seemed too loud in the quiet night.
Before she could even reach for the door handles, the front door flew open.
“Mom!” Monica rushed out, still in her pajamas, her face streaked with tears. She crashed into Lucia’s arms with such force that Lucia stumbled backward.
“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Lucia held her daughter tight, feeling the trembling irt the girl’s small frame.
“We thought something bad happened to you.” Monica sobbed into Lucia’s shoulder. “You looked so angry when you left. We were scared you might not come back.”
The words hit Lucia like a punch to the chest. Of course they were scared. These children had already been abandoned once by someone they trusted. The fear of being left ran deep in their bones now.
“I will always come back to you.” Lucía whispered, stroking Monica’s hair. “Always. No matter how angry I get, no matter what happens, I will always come home to you.”
Over Monica’s head, she saw the others crowding in the doorway. Lena’s face was pale with worry. Lucas stood with his arms crossed, trying to look tough, but she could see the relief in his eyes. Ria was biting her lip, a habit from childhood that meant she was fighting tears.
And Alexander. Alexander stood behind them all, his face a mask of concern and something else. Pride, maybe. Or love. “Come inside.” His voice came quiet, steady. “You’re shivering.”
It was only then that Lucia realized she was shaking. The adrenaline from the confrontation was wearing off, leaving her feeling cold and drained.
They all moved into the living room, clustering together on the large sectional sofa like they were seeking safety in numbers. Lucia sat in the middle, with Monica curled against her left side and Lena on her right. Lucas and Ria sat across from them, while Alexander took the chair closest to Lucia.
“What happened?” Ria’s voice came small, frightened. “Did you see Dad?”
Lucia nodded, suddenly feeling exhausted. “I saw him. And Margaret.”
“What did you tell him?” Lucas’s voice was tight with tension.
“I told him that he would no longer have access to you. Any of you.”
The words settled over the room like a blanket. Monica’s grip on Lucia’s arm tightened. Lena reached for her hand and squeezed it.
“Can you do that?” Ria asked. “Legally, I mean?”
“We’ll find out.” Lucia’s jaw set in a hard line. “But I meant what I said. I won’t let him hurt you anymore.”
Lucas’s face crumpled slightly. “Mom, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry we didn’t tell you sooner about what he was doing.”
“Hey.” Lucia’s voice was gentle but firm. “Look at me, Lucas.”
He raised his eyes to meet hers, and she saw the guilt eating him alive.
“You have nothing to apologize for. Nothing. You were trying to survive in an impossible situation. You were protecting yourselves the only way you knew how.”
“But we should have…”
“You should have been protected by the adults in your life. That’s what should have happened. The fact that you weren’t. that’s on us, not on you.”
Ria wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “So what happens now?”
Lucia looked around the room at these five young faces. Her biological children and the daughter of her heart who had helped her heal. They were all looking at her with hope and trust and love, and she felt the weight of responsibility settle on her shoulders.
But it was a good weight. A welcome weight.
Chapter 145
“Now you’re safe.” The words came simple and true. “Now you get to be kids again, instead of having to walk on eggshells and worry about making someone angry.”
“But where will we live?” Ria’s question hung in the air. “I mean, our stuff is still at Dad’s house, and…”
“Would you like to live here?” Lucía interrupted gently. “With me and Alexander and Monica and Lena?”
The question hung in the air for a moment. Lucia held her breath, suddenly terrified that they might say no. That they might want to go back to Marco despite everything.
Lucas was the first to speak. “Yes.” The word came out strong and clear. “Yes, I want to live here. I want to live with you.” “Me too.” Ria spoke quickly, her voice breaking. “If you’ll have us. I know we messed up before, and…”
“And nothing.” Lucia’s voice came firm, absolute. “This is your home. All of you. For as long as you want it to be.”
Monica looked up at her with shining eyes. “Really? We can all stay together?”
“Really.”
Lena bounced slightly in her seat, her excitement bubbling over. “This is going to be amazing! We can all share rooms if you want, or we can each have our own space, whatever makes you comfortable. And we can redecorate! Make it really feel like home!”
Ria smiled. The first real smile Lucia had seen from her in months. “That sounds perfect.”
“But what about our clothes?” Ria asked suddenly, reality crashing back. “Our books and pictures and our whole lives are in that house.”
Lucia’s jaw tightened slightly. The thought of sending her children back into that toxic environment, even for their belongings, made her stomach turn.
“We’ll shop for new clothes tomorrow.” The decision came easy, certain. “New everything. Fresh start, fresh wardrobe.” “But Mom, that’s going to cost…”
“Money is not an issue.” Alexander spoke up quietly. “Whatever you need, whenever you need it. Consider it handled.” Lucas shook his head. “We can’t let you…”
“You’re not letting me do anything.” Alexander’s smile came warm and genuine. “You’re my family now. Taking care of family isn’t a burden; it’s a privilege.”
Lucia felt her heart swell at his words. This man who had already given her so much was now opening his arms to her children without hesitation,
“Besides,” Lena added with a grin, “I’ve been wanting sisters and a brother forever! This is like Christmas morning for me.” The easy way she included Lucas in her excitement made Lucia’s eyes water. These children, all of them, were going to be okay. They were going to heal together, grow together, become a real family.
“So it’s settled then.” Lucia looked around the room. “Tomorrow we’ll go shopping. Tonight, we’ll figure out sleeping arrangements and just be together.”
“I can sleep on the couch.” Lucas offered.
“Absolutely not.” Alexander’s response came immediate, “We have plenty of guest rooms, Everyone gets their own space.” “Actually,” Monica spoke softly, “could I maybe stay with Mom tonight? I know I’m too old for that, but…”
“You’re never too old for that.” Lucia pulled her daughter closer. “Of course you can stay with me.”
“Can we all have a sleepover?” Lena’s excitement was infectious. “Like, all four of us in the master suite? It’s huge, and there’s that sitting area with the big couch…”
Ria and Lucas exchanged glances, then both nodded.
“That sounds nice.” Ria’s voice came tentative but hopeful. “If it’s okay with Mom.”
“It’s more than okay.” Lucia’s voice came thick with emotion. “It sounds perfect.”
They spent the next hour arranging pillows and blankets, raiding the kitchen for snacks, and just talking. Real talking, without the careful tiptoeing around subjects that had characterized their interactions for so long.
As the children settled in for their impromptu sleepover, Lucia slipped out to the balcony where Alexander was standing. looking out at the city lights.
“Thank you.” The words came soft but sincere as she moved to stand beside him.
“For what?”
Chapter 145
“For this. For them. For making room in your life for my chaos.”
Alexander turned to face her, his expression serious. “They’re not chaos, Lucia. They’re your heart walking around outside your body. I understand that. And I love you enough to love them too.”
Lucia felt tears start in her eyes again. “I need to file for sole custody. Tomorrow. I can’t let Marco have any legal claim on them after what he’s done.”
“Do you have enough evidence?”
Lucia nodded grimly. “Photos of the bruises. The children will testify if needed. A clear pattern of abuse and violence.” She paused. “It won’t be easy. Marco will fight it.”
“Let him fight.” Alexander’s voice came hard, determined “We have better lawyers. More resources. And most importantly, we have the truth on our side.”
