Chapter 188
Chapter 188
The sound of footsteps thundering down the marble staircase echoed through the house like a drumbeat of pure joy. Lucas burst into the kitchen where his family was having breakfast, clutching an official-looking envelope in his trembling hands.
“It came!” His voice cracked with emotion. “The letter from Riverside Elite Academy! It finally came!”
Lucia dropped her coffee cup, not caring that the hot liquid splashed across the granite countertop. Ria and Monica jumped up from their chairs, while Lena bounced on her toes with excitement. Alexander set down his newspaper, his face already breaking into a proud smile.
“Well, open it!” Monica demanded, practically vibrating with anticipation.
Lucas’s hands shook as he tore open the envelope, his eyes scanning the first line of the letter. For a moment, his face showed nothing but concentration as he read the words that would determine his future.
Then his expression exploded into pure elation.
“I got in!” He screamed, jumping up and down like a little boy instead of the fifteen-year-old young man he had become. “I got into Riverside Elite! Full academic scholarship! They accepted me!”
The kitchen erupted in cheers and celebration. Lucia was the first to reach him, throwing her arms around her son and pulling him into a fierce hug while tears streamed down her face.
“I’m so proud of you.” She sobbed into his shoulder. “So incredibly proud, sweetheart.”
Alexander was next, wrapping both Lucia and Lucas in his strong embrace. “Congratulations, son. You worked so hard for this. You deserve every bit of this success
The word ‘son’ made Lucas’s eyes fill with fresh tears. To hear Alexander call him that, with such genuine pride and love, meant more than any acceptance letter ever could.
Monica and Lena attacked him from both sides, hugging him around the waist while Ria took photos with her phone, wanting to capture every moment of this life-changing celebration.
“Tell us everything!” Ria demanded. “What did the letter say? What’s your track? When do you start?”
Lucas wiped his eyes and smoothed out the acceptance letter, reading the official words that still felt like a dream. “It says I’ve been accepted into the Advanced Studies program with a concentration in Leadership and Athletics. Full scholarship covering tuition, books, and fees.”
“And?” Alexander prompted, knowing there had to be more good news.
“And they want me to captain the varsity football team. Apparently, my essay about family resilience and overcoming adversity really impressed the admissions committee.”
Lucia felt her heart swell with pride as she remembered helping Lucas write that essay. He had struggled with how much personal information to share, how vulnerable to be about their family’s journey. In the end, he had written from the heart about loss, healing, and the power of chosen family.
“That’s incredible, Lucas.” Lena beamed at her stepbrother. “You’re going to be amazing at that school.”
“The best part.” Lucas continued, his voice growing stronger with each word. “Is that they specifically mentioned my video testimony. They said my courage in speaking out about family abuse showed the kind of character and integrity they want in their students.”
Alexander placed his hands on Lucas’s shoulders, looking directly into his eyes. “I am so proud of you. Not just for getting into this school, but for the man you’re becoming. You took the worst experiences of your life and turned them into strength, wisdom, and compassion for others.”
“I couldn’t have done it without you, Dad.” Lucas replied, the title coming naturally now. “Without all of you. This family saved my life and gave me a future worth working toward.”
Lucia wiped her tears and moved to the kitchen island, pulling out her phone. “We need to celebrate properly. I’ m calling the restaurant to make reservat

“Mom’ Lucas interrupted gently, laughing at her enthusiasm. “Slow down. We have celebrate.”
But Lucia was already in full celebration mode, her maternal pride overriding any attempt at calm. This was her son, the boy who had suffered so much, achieving his dreams through pure determination and hard work.
“You know what this means, right?” Ria grinned at her brother. “You’re officially the first person in our family to get into Riverside Elite.”
“It’s only a high school.” Lucas tried to sound modest.
“It’s the best high school in the state.” Monica declared. “You’re still our genius brother who’s going to take over the world.”
Lena nodded enthusiastically. “Can we visit you at school? Can we see your campus and meet your teachers?”
“Of course.” Lucas laughed. “You can visit anytime you want.”
Alexander had been quiet during the initial celebration, but now he cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention. “Lucas, I want you to know how proud I am of the choices you’ve made. When you first came to live with us, you were carrying so much pain and responsibility. You thought you had to protect everyone else before you could think about yourself.”
Lucas nodded, remembering those dark days when he felt like the weight of his family’s survival rested on his shoulders.
“But you learned to let go of that burden and focus on your own growth and healing. You learned to trust that other people could take care of the protecting while you took care of becoming the man you were meant to be.”
“You taught me that.” Lucas spoke quietly. “You showed me what real strength looks like.”
“And now you’re going to show other people.” Alexander continued. “You’re going to succeed in ways that will inspire other young people who are facing similar challenges.”
Lucia looked around at her family gathered in the kitchen, all of them glowing with pride and joy for Lucas’s achievement. This was what family was supposed to look like. People celebrating each other’s victories without jealousy or competition, supporting each other’s dreams even when those dreams meant separation.
“Have you thought about living arrangements?” She asked, trying to keep her voice casual despite the anxiety gnawing at her stomach. “Riverside Elite has excellent dormitories, and the campus life experience can be really valuable for…”
“Actually.” Lucas interrupted, his expression growing serious. “I’ve been thinking about that a lot.”
The kitchen fell quiet as everyone waited to hear his decision. Lucia held her breath, knowing that part of growing up meant leaving home, but desperately hoping her son wasn’t ready to leave them yet.
“The thing is.” Lucas continued, looking around at each family member. “I know most kids my age can’t wait to get away from their parents and live on their own. But we’re not like most families.”
He paused, gathering his thoughts.
“We fought so hard to be together. We went through hell to build this family, to create this safe space where we can all be ourselves. And I’m not ready to give that up yet.”
Lucia felt tears starting in her eyes again.
“So I want to commute from home, at least for the first year or two. Riverside Elite is only thirty minutes away. I can have the school experience during the day and come home to my family at night.”
“Are you sure?” Alexander asked gently. “School is about independence and discovering who you are outside of your family structure. We don’t want you to miss out on that because you feel obligated to stay close.”
“I’m not staying because I feel obligated.” Lucas spoke firmly. “I’m staying because I want to. Because this family is the best thing that ever happened to me, and I’m not ready to leave it behind.”
He looked directly at Lucia. “Mom, when I was living with our father, I couldn’t wait to get away. I was already planning my escape before I even finished middle school. But here, with all of you, I feel like I’m exactly where I belong

“But what if you change your mind?” Lucia asked, wanting to support his decision while also making sure he didn’t limit his options. “What if you decide you want the full boarding experience?”
“Then I’ll move to the dorms.” Lucas spoke simply. “Riverside Elite allows students to change their housing status anytime. But for now, I want to go to school from home. I want to come back every day to this family that fought for me when no one else would.”
Monica threw her arms around Lucas’s waist. “I’m so glad you’re staying! I was scared you were going to leave and we’d never see you.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” Lucas assured her, hugging her back. “You’re stuck with me for at least a few more years.”
Lena joined the hug, followed by Ria, until all four siblings were clustered together in the middle of the kitchen while their parents watched with overflowing hearts.
“This calls for a family day.” Alexander announced. “No work, no obligations. We’re spending the entire day celebrating Lucas’s achievement and this family’s success.”
“Can we go to that amusement park upstate?” Lena asked excitedly.
“Can we take the helicopter?” Monica added hopefully.
“Can we eat cotton candy until we’re sick?” Ria chimed in.
“Yes to all of it.” Lucia laughed, feeling lighter than she had in months. “Today is about celebration and family and joy.”
As they began making plans for their impromptu family adventure, Lucia caught Alexander’s eye across the kitchen. In his expression, she saw the same profound gratitude she felt in her own heart.
They had taken broken children and helped them heal. They had created a family based on choice rather than obligation. And now they were watching those children grow into confident, successful young adults who still chose to stay close to the people who loved them.
