Chapter 280
Josh drove in silence.
Not the silence of a man grinding through anger the way he had driven for months, the white–knuckled, jaw–tight silence of someone who had decided that the world was wrong and was working out how to prove it. This was different. This was the silence of a man who had just sat across from ourteen–year–old girl who had every reason to be his enemy and had chosen not to be, and who was now trying to understand what kind of person that made her, and what kind of person it made him by comparison.
Monica’s voice moved through his mind.
Teach them kindness.
He looked at the ultrasound photograph on the passenger seat. The grey shapes he had stared at in an examination room while Stella squeezed his hand, both of them trying to understand what they were looking at. He had been a different person in that room. Or the same person, maybe, but without yet knowing what he was capable of becoming.
“I’m trying,” he said quietly to the photograph.
He did not turn toward his parents‘ house.
He turned toward Stella’s parents‘ house and did not allow himself to consider whether it was a good idea because if he considered it he would talk himself out of it, and he had spent enough of this year talking himself out of things that mattered while talking himself into things that didn’t.
He parked outside and sat in the car.
The house looked the same as it always had. He could remember the first time Williams had brought him here for dinner, the specific effort he had made that evening to seem like someone worth trusting with a daughter. He had meant it then. He had meant a lot of things at the beginning.
He almost started the engine.
He thought about Monica stepping backward without meaning to, and what that had done to him, and what it meant that she had still found the words she had found.
He got out.
He walked to the door and knocked before the hesitation could catch him.
Stella opened it.
She looked at him with an expression that had many things in it and showed very few of them. The distance that had been growing in her eyes for weeks was still there. But she was also very pregnant and more present in herself than the last time he had seen her, standing in this same doorway, and something in seeing her like that, real and close and belonging to a life that was moving forward with or without him, made his chest contract.
“So,” she said. “You finally came.”
He looked at her and could not find immediately what he wanted to say, which was unusual for a man who had spent past months finding words for everything.
“I know I don’t deserve your time,” he said.
Her arms folded across her stomach in the specific way they had always folded when she was waiting to hear whether

Stella remained standing. She did not gesture to a seat and he did not take one.

Stella looked at him without interrupting
“I stopped being the man you married,” he said, “Somewhere in the middle of all of it I stopped being that man and i became someone you had to manage instead of someone you could rely on.”
A long silence.
“I watched the video,” Stella said.
“I thought you would.”
“I watched all of it.” She paused. “I’m proud of you.”
He looked at her.
“Not because everything is fixed,” she said quickly. “Not because you’ve earned anything back. But because you stood there and said what was true when it cost you something to say it. When your father walked out and you still said it. Her eyes wet, though her voice was steady. “That took something”
“I should have found it sooner,” he said.
“Yes,” she agreed. “You should have.”

Stella closed her eyes briefly
“I miss us too,” she said.
He took one careful step forward.
“But missing each other isn’t enough,” she said.
He stopped.
“I know.” He swallowed. “I’ve made a decision about your father’s offer.”
She waited.
“I’ll take it,” he said. “The job. I’ll start at the beginning, learn properly, stop trying to find the version of success that doesn’t require effort.” He looked at her directly. “I’ve spent years looking for shortcuts. I don’t want shortcuts anymore. I want to actually know what I’m doing.”
Something shifted slightly in her face.
“What about the money?” she asked. “What Margaret gave the family.”
“I’m not going to waste it,” he said. “I’ll put it into savings. When I’ve learned enough, when I actually know how to build something that isn’t built on other people’s losses, I’ll use it to start something real.” He looked at his hands. “I want our child to grow up watching me build something I’m not ashamed of. Not watching me chase something that was never mine.” Stella looked at him for a long time with the expression she wore when she was deciding whether something was true.
“Come home,” he said. “Let me do this differently. Let me actually do it.”
She turned to the window.
The street outside was quiet and ordinary and moving in its own way, people and cars and a dog being walked, all of it indifferent to the two of them and the distance that had accumulated between them.
“I believe you’re sincere,” she said finally.
He felt hope move in him like something fragile being carefully held.
She turned back.
“But sincerity today isn’t the same as being this man in six months.” She looked at him steadily. “When something goes wrong. When money gets tight or a deal falls through or something feels unfair. I need to know that the Josh who is standing in front of me right now is still there then.” She shook her head. “I won’t bring our baby home to a house built on promises.”
His head dropped slightly.
“I understand,” he said.
“I hope you do,” she said. Gently. Like she genuinely meant it.
He moved toward the door. There was nothing else to say that would not be too much, and he had learned at some point in

“Thank you for listening,” he said.
He reached the door.
