David pulled into the driveway and turned off the engine. Neither of them got out right away.

The children were already unbuckling in the back. Clara asked if her bedroom still had the drawing she’d pinned to the corkboard. Clinton told her, with patient authority, that drawings didn’t move on their own.

Claire stared at the house.

She had driven past it twice during the separation. She never stopped. She just slowed down the way you slow down near something that used to be yours. The front door was still the same color. The little tree David had planted three years ago on the left side of the garden had grown taller than she remembered. The curtains in the children’s rooms were the ones she had picked out herself.

She stared at the house and, for the first time, wondered if she deserved to walk through its front door.

David looked at her. Ready?

She tried to smile. I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready.

He reached over and took her hand. Then we’ll do it together.

The children tumbled out before she could answer, running for the front steps with the excitement only kids have when they come home to something familiar. Claire got out of the car and walked beside David across the driveway.

David unlocked the door and pushed it open.

Everyone froze.

Jane stood in the living room doorway holding a cup of tea in both hands, clearly caught in the middle of something that had nothing to do with any of this. Beside her stood Zia, David’s younger sister, a jacket in one hand and her phone in the other, looking like someone who had been five minutes from walking out the door.

Both women looked at Claire.

Claire looked back.

A heavy silence settled over the hallway.

Jane set her tea down on the console table, slow and careful, buying herself a second before she spoke.

What is she doing here? She looked at David, not Claire.

I brought my wife home,David said.

I thought you were ending the marriage.”

I was.

Then what changed?

He glanced at Claire once. She did.

Jane looked at Claire properly then, searching her face for something. Whatever she found, or didn’t find, she turned back to her son with an expression that carried more sorrow than anger. Somehow that was worse.

The children had already gone quiet, the way kids do when they sense the adults around them need space. Clinton took Clara’s hand. David crouched down in front of them.

Why don’t you two head upstairs,he said. We’ll be up soon.

Clara looked at her father, then her grandmother, then her mother. Daddy?

We’re okay,he said. I promise.

Clinton started up the stairs first. Clara followed him, and both of them disappeared around the landing. The house went quiet again.

Jane crossed her arms, not in anger, just gathering herself.

I watched my son stop smiling, she said. I watched him stop eating properly. I watched him hold himself together every day for those children while he fell apart inside. She held Claire’s gaze. And you expect me to welcome you back into this house.

No,Claire said. I don’t expect that. She held Jane’s eyes. I don’t expect forgiveness. I don’t expect trust. I don’t even expect a second chance. I know what I did. I hurt David. I hurt our children. I hurt you and Zia. I’m ashamed of who I became. Her voice held steady. I’m truly sorry.

Zia stepped forward.

Sorry,” she said, with a laugh that had no warmth in it. My brother married you because he wanted to do right by you. He spent years trying to reach you, trying to be a husband to someone only interested in a war. You manipulated him. You lied to him. You dragged our family’s name through the same disaster your own family caused, and you stood in front of cameras making accusations about innocent people while David sat in this house trying to explain to two small children why their mother was in the newspapers.” Her voice climbed and she didn’t try to bring it down. And now you’re standing in his hallway saying sorry.

Enough,David said, stepping forward.

Zia turned on her brother.

She’s my wife,” he said. She’s admitted what she did. She’s apologized. You don’t have to forgive her today. You don’t have to forgive her ever. But you won’t stand in our home and speak to her that way.

Zia stared at him.

Jane’s face changed again, the sorrow settling into something that looked like fear, the fear of a woman who had been dreading exactly this moment.

You’ve chosen her over us,Jane said.

No, Mum.David’s voice stayed level. I’m choosing the woman she’s trying to become instead of the woman she used to be. That’s not the same as choosing her over you.

Jane shook her head. You’ve forgotten what she put you through.

I haven’t forgotten a single part of it,David said. That’s how I know what’s different now.

Jane looked at her son the way a mother looks at a grown child who has made a choice she cannot undo, knowing her part in it has already ended.

Mum,Claire said.

Jane’s eyes moved to her.

I know I don’t deserve your trust,” Claire said. I know words aren’t enough. I’m not asking you to forgive me today, or tomorrow, or on any schedule that suits me. I’m asking for a chance to show you something different. She looked at Jane straight on. If it takes months, I’ll still be showing you. If it takes years, I’ll still be here.

Jane said nothing.

Zia picked up her handbag from the chair. At the door she turned back once.

You get one chance, she said. If you hurt him again, that’s the end of it.

You won’t have to tell me,Claire said. It’ll be the end for me too.

Zia walked out.

Jane picked up her coat from the arm of the sofa and moved to the door without looking at Claire. At the threshold she stopped.

I love you,she said to David, still facing the door. You know that. You’ve always known that. She paused. I can’t watch you go through that again. If she does this again, I won’t sit across from you and pretend I didn’t warn you.

Mum.

She went out. The door shut behind her.

The hallway fell silent.

Claire stood there with her coat still on, hands at her sides. She didn’t cry right away. She just stood in the space the words had left behind.

I should go,” she said.

David turned. What?

They’re right. Her voice had lost its steadiness. I’ve hurt you enough. I don’t want to ruin what you with your mother too. We should finish the divorce. I shouldn’t have let you talk me out of it.
