The kitchen smelled of coffee and butter and the specific warmth of a house where people were comfortable enough to be loud before nine in the morning.

Lucia was at the counter making eggs. Alexander was beside her, closer than was strictly necessary for the task, which was something he did now without explaining it, the proximity becoming its own habit in the months since the hospital. The radio was on low. The morning light was coming through the window above the sink at the angle that meant the day was going to be clear.

It was the kind of morning that asked nothing of anyone.

Lucas was at the table with a bowl of cereal that he had not yet eaten because he was in the middle of telling Lena something that required both hands and her full attention, which she was declining to give him because she was looking at her phone.

“I’m just saying,” Lucas said.

“I’m not listening,” Lena said.

“You could at least pretend.”

“I could,” Lena said, “but I’m choosing not to.”

Monica was drawing at the far end of the table, the sketchbook open, her attention divided between the page and the conversation in the way she divided her attention when neither thing was urgent enough to demand the whole of it.

Ria was reading something on her tablet, coffee beside her, the specific comfortable authority of someone who had claimed their corner of the morning and was not being dislodged from it.

Lucia cracked the last egg and heard Alexander say something low to her, one of the small things he said in the mornings that were not important enough to repeat later but were part of the texture of the day, and she smiled at the pan.

She thought about the twins.

She thought about the scan on Dr. Reyes’s screen and Alexander’s hand over his mouth. She thought about the argument the night before about names, which had moved from the sex of the babies to actual names without anyone formally agreeing to make that transition, and which had ended with Lucas putting forward a name that everyone else had rejected immediately and Lucas defending it with the energy of someone who had already decided it was right and was simply waiting for everyone else to catch up.

She was happy.

That was the thought, arriving plainly and without qualification. She was happy in the specific way of someone who had been through enough to understand exactly what happiness was worth.

The doorbell rang.

Alexander put his mug down and looked at the time. “Were we expecting anyone?”

“No,” Lucia said.

He went.

She heard the front door open. She heard his voice, the neutral greeting of someone who did not know who they were speaking to. She heard another voice, a woman’s, low and clear.

She flipped the eggs.

The voices in the hallway continued for longer than a wrong address or a delivery would require.

She turned the heat down.

Alexander came back through the kitchen doorway.

Behind him was a woman.

She was perhaps thirty, perhaps a little more, dressed in the way of someone who had chosen her clothes with precision, the coat fitted perfectly, the shoes the kind that made a specific sound on tile. She had the bearing of a person who was accustomed to entering rooms and being the person others looked at. She was not looking around the kitchen nervously or taking it in with surprise. She was looking at it the way you looked at something you had prepared yourself to see.

The children registered her arrival in stages. Lena looked up from her phone. Lucas turned. Monica’s pencil slowed on the page. Ria lowered her tablet.

“This is Ruth Walker,” Alexander said. His voice had a quality she had not heard from him in a very long time. Not uncertainty exactly. Something beneath certainty. “She says she needs to speak with us.”

Lucia looked at the woman.

The woman looked at Lucia. The look had something in it that Lucia could not immediately name, not hostility and not apology, something more composed than either, the look of a woman who had made a decision before she arrived and was not going to unmake it.

“Mrs. Kane, Ruth Walker said. “Thank you for seeing me.”

Lucia set the spatula down on the counter.

There was something in the room that had not been there before this woman entered it, something that was not yet named and that Lucia’s body was registering before her mind had caught up.

“What can we do for you?” she said.

Ruth Walker stood very still in the center of the kitchen.

She looked at Lucia.

She looked at Alexander.

She reached into the bag on her shoulder and produced nothing, just let it settle back, just a gesture that had

been started and redirected.

“I’ll get to the point,” she said. “I think you’d prefer that.”

Nobody disagreed.

“My name is Ruth Walker,” she said again, as though anchoring herself to it. “I’m pregnant.”

Lucas put his spoon down.

The kitchen held the particular silence of a room where several people have all registered the same thing at the same moment and not one of them has decided yet what to do with it.

“I’m carrying Alexander Kane’s baby,” she said.

The silence after that was a different kind.

Lucia did not move from where she was standing beside the stove.

She did not look at Alexander immediately. She looked at Ruth Walker, at the composed, elegant, very still woman standing in her kitchen on a morning that had smelled of coffee and butter and the ordinary warmth of a life being lived, and she held what had just been said in the air of the room.

Then she turned toward her husband.

Alexander’s face was something she had not seen before.

Not guilt. Not the specific expression of a man caught at something. Something else. Something that looked like the disorientation of a person trying to make sense of a sentence that was not making sense.

He looked at Ruth Walker.

“I have never seen this woman before,” he said.

His voice was completely flat. Not defensive. Just the plain statement of what he believed to be true.

Ruth Walker looked at him with an expression that had not changed, which was itself something. She had not flinched at his denial and she had not looked surprised by it.

She looked at him for a moment.

Then she said: “You saw me two months ago. In Zurich.”

The kitchen was completely still.

Outside the window the morning was continuing, clear and cold, indifferent to what was happening inside the house. Cars on the road. A bird somewhere. The ordinary world going about its ordinary business.

Inside, Lucia stood at the stove with the heat turned down and the eggs going cold in the pan and her eyes on her husband’s face, watching what it was doing, looking for the thing she needed to see or the thing she was afraid of seeing, and unable yet to tell which of those two things she was looking at

Alexander’s jaw was tight.

He did not look at Lucia.

He kept his eyes on Ruth Walker.

“I was in Zurich two months ago,” he said.

The sentence sat in the kitchen.

He did not finish it.
