The conversation in the living room had reached the particular plateau confrontations reach when all the initial words have been said and nobody knows yet what comes next.

Ruth Walker was still in the armchair.

Alexander stood near the window, his back partially turned, and Lucia could see the tension in his shoulders, the set of them that meant he was holding something very large inside a very small space.

Lucas was looking at the tablet again.

The house had gone into a quiet that wasn’t peace, only the absence of the next thing.

Then Ruth put her hand on the armrest and her face changed.

Nothing dramatic. A slight alteration, pallor arriving under the composure, the kind of pallor that comes when a body decides to do something regardless of anyone’s plans. Her other hand moved to her stomach.

“Are you alright?” Ria said, first to move toward her.

Ruth shook her head once, jaw tight. “This happens sometimes.”

She wasn’t looking at anyone, her eyes fixed somewhere in the middle distance, managing something physical from the inside rather than showing it.

Alexander turned from the window and looked at her. His expression hadn’t warmed, but something in it had shifted, a man who hadn’t stopped disbelieving her but was looking at a woman who seemed genuinely unwell and couldn’t fully ignore that.

“Should we call someone?” Lena said.

“I’ll be fine,” Ruth said.

She wasn’t fine. The pallor deepened, and Ria was already at her side.

Alexander crossed the room, picked up his phone, and called the family physician without discussing it with anyone first. He stepped out briefly, then came back to say the doctor would be there within the hour.

The hour was long. Ruth sat in the armchair while the household moved around her in the awkward way of people unsure what role they were playing toward a stranger who had upended everything and was now sitting in their chair looking unwell.

Monica brought water without being asked. Ruth accepted it without looking at her.

Dr. Henry arrived, the family’s physician for years, carrying the efficient calm of someone who had seen enough in this household not to be surprised by much. He examined Ruth in the guest sitting room and came back out wearing the look doctors wear when they’re about to say something that will land heavily

“She is pregnant,” he said, addressing Lucia and Alexander both. “Approximately eight to nine weeks. The

dizziness is consistent with early pregnancy.” A pause. “She needs rest. She needs to avoid stress.”

He said it without taking any position on what had brought him here or why this particular patient sat in this particular chair. He left a number to call if symptoms worsened, and went.

The household gathered again in the living room.

Ruth was back in the chair, some of the pallor gone, her composure returned, though it sat differently now, less like a weapon and more like something she was using to hold herself together.

“I need to tell you something else,” she said.

Nobody invited her to. Nobody stopped her.

“Reporters found my apartment yesterday. I don’t know how. I had been careful about where I was staying.” She looked at her hands. “I have nowhere secure to go right now. Wherever I try to stay, the press will follow.”

Lucia looked at her, a woman eight or nine weeks pregnant, whoever the father turned out to be, claiming to have nowhere safe left, holding evidence that could easily be fabricated while sitting there looking genuinely unwell. Both things could be true at once. Lucia held them both.

Lucas looked between his father, his mother, and Ruth, something calculating moving behind his eyes, the look of someone who had already found one inconsistency and was now weighing the larger picture.

“Let her stay,” he said.

Alexander turned.

“Temporarily,” Lucas added, before his father could speak. “Here. Under this roof. Where we can watch what she does.”

Alexander looked at his son, and what he saw wasn’t sentiment or charity. It was strategy, the look of a young man who had already reached a conclusion about the best available position.

Alexander understood the logic. He didn’t care about the logic.

“Absolutely not,” he said, flat, leaving no room for the question to come back around.

He looked at Lucia.

Lucia was looking at Ruth, turning something over the slow way she did when she was deciding something rather than reacting to it.

“Let her stay.” Lucia said.

The quiet that followed felt different from everything before it.

Alexander stared at his wife. Ruth went very still in the chair.

“If she’s lying.” Lucia said, her voice already carrying the shape of a decision rather than a question. “then having her in this house is the fastest way to find out. She can’t hold a fabrication together indefinitely under

this roof, with this family watching everything she does. We’ll see the inconsistencies. We’ll watch her make mistakes.”

Alexander kept his eyes on her.

“And if she somehow isn’t lying,” Lucia said, “we’ll face that when we have facts instead of accusations.”

Ruth lowered her eyes. For the first time that morning, the corner of her mouth moved, gone again before anyone could be certain they’d seen it at all.

The morning light kept coming through the windows. The house that had smelled of coffee and warmth two hours ago was the same house it had always been, and completely different, and everyone in it understood both things at once.

Alexander looked at his wife, then at Ruth, then at the room.

He said nothing.

Which was not the same as saying no.
