“Fix this,” she said. “Whatever this is. Wherever it came from. I need you to take it apart.” She held his eyes. “Because I will not have another child grow up calling you Dad while I’m standing in the same house. I will not have what I built here destroyed by something I didn’t choose and didn’t cause.”

She turned and walked out of the kitchen. He heard her cross the hallway, heard her go up the stairs, and then the house went quiet around him, the breakfast dishes still sitting where they’d been left, morning light still coming through the window like nothing had happened at all.
He stood there a long moment, both hands flat on the counter, head bowed.
Then he straightened, pulled out his phone, and dialed.
“It’s me,” he said when the call connected. “I want everything on Ruth Walker. Every record, every address, every name she’s ever used. And pull the security footage from the Meridian Grand again, every camera on that floor, not just the one she gave us.”
A pause while the voice on the other end answered.
“I don’t care how long it takes,” Alexander said. “Find out who built this. And find out who sent her to my house.”
He ended the call and stood in the quiet kitchen a moment longer, the cups from breakfast still exactly where they’d been set down, nothing in the room changed at all, and everything about it different than it had been an hour ago.

because it hadn’t been shouting at all. He thought of his father’s hands flat on the counter, head bowed, the room gone quiet around him.
“I believe you,” Lucas said. “I have since the first moment she said it, and I haven’t moved from that. I’m not going to.”
Alexander looked back at the garden, then set the glass down on the arm of the chair.
“Thank you,” he said, his voice rough the way voices go rough after carrying something all day and finally setting it beside someone who isn’t asking to hold it too. “I don’t know what to do with any of this. I built something with your mother I’ve never built with anyone. Now I’m watching it come apart from the outside and I can’t reach whatever’s driving it.”
Lucas stayed quiet.
“I know who I am,” Alexander said. “I know what I did and didn’t do. But that doesn’t help when the person I need to believe it is too hurt to hear it.” He looked at his hands. “She said she doesn’t know what to trust. Not that she doesn’t trust me. That’s a different thing. Worse.”
“We’re going to prove it,” Lucas said. “We’ll find what’s behind this and put it in front of her.”
“You’re sixteen.”
“I’m aware. I’m still right.”
