Chapter 41
Chapter 41
The conference room was quiet. The only sound was the shuffle of papers, pens scratching, and soft clicks from laptops.
Lucia sat at the head of the table. Reports spread before her: financial statements, shipping contracts, acquisition proposals. Charts showing revenue flows, supply chains, numbers, and notes. Every line mattered. Every figure could be a weapon.
Alexander Kane sat beside her. Calm. Collected. His dark suit sharp against the pale light filtering through the blinds. His eyes didn’t flinch, didn’t shift. He already knew the chaos they were about to create, and it didn’t touch him.
Across the table, three analysts from Kane Global worked silently. They had spent weeks breaking Marco Hart‘ s empire apart on paper. Mapping weaknesses, testing scenarios, finding the fracture points.
One of the younger analysts leaned forward, pointing to a screen. “Here.”
Lucia looked. The name jumped out at her. Stone Maritime.
The analyst spoke. “Marco Hart’s biggest shipping partner. Thirty percent of Hart Industries‘ revenue flows through them. One misstep and the company could stumble.”
She let the words sink in. Thirty percent. A single partner, a single point of vulnerability. Marco had built a kingdom, but it depended on others, on loyalty that could be broken.
Alex’s voice was quiet but firm. “If this connection disappears, Hart Industries will suffer. Investors will panic. The board will scramble.”
The gray–haired analyst nodded. “It won’t collapse overnight. But it will shock the company. Fear spreads fast. Panic is contagious.”
Lucia felt a cold thrill in her chest. Not anger. Not satisfaction. Something sharper. Control. Power.
She flipped through the folder, reading carefully. Each page detailed contracts, revenue percentages, and weaknesses Marco didn’t know existed. He thought his empire was untouchable.
The young analyst continued. “Stone Maritime has been in the family for three generations. Marco Hart’s father started the partnership. Richard Stone, the current CEO, is tired. He’s been loyal for decades, but Marco‘ s been pushing him hard lately. Cutting margins, changing terms, late payments. Threatening to find alternatives. Constant pressure.”
The word threatened rang in Lucia’s mind. She knew it all too well. Marco believed pressure broke people. He always thought it solved everything.
The older analyst leaned forward. “Richard Stone is frustrated. He’s seen thirty years of loyalty ignored. Marco treats them like they are grateful just to work with him. He doesn’t see partners. Only numbers.”
Lucia’s lips curved in a small smile. That sounded exactly like Marco. Using everyone. Discarding everyone. Believing no one would ever walk away.
Alex’s voice cut through the quiet. “Stone is unhappy. He wants out. He will leave if given a safe way.”
Lucia tapped the folder. “Price?”
The analyst answered immediately. “Eight hundred million dollars. Cash. Quick sale. No negotiation. Clean exit.”
Lucia nodded slowly. Six months ago, that number would have seemed impossible. Now it was just another tool. Another step in her plan.
She imagined Marco when the news hit. The board meeting. Phones ringing off the hook. Investors shouting. A part of his empire vanishing overnight. He would panic, scramble, and look powerless. For once, he would feel fear.
Alex glanced at her. “Shall we call him?”

She didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”
He picked up his phone and dialed. Lucia watched his face. Calm, precise, unshakable. “Richard, this is Alexander Kane. I understand you may be interested in selling Stone Maritime. I have a direct acquisition proposal. Eight hundred million dollars. Cash. Immediate. Two hours to meet. Is that possible?”
There was a pause. A faint rustle on the other side. Alex’s hand didn’t tremble. He waited. Then he nodded slightly. “Excellent. See you in two hours.”
The analysts glanced at each other. Two hours. The first real strike. Six months of preparation, waiting for this single moment.
Lucia closed her eyes for a fraction of a second. For seventeen years, Marco had controlled her life. Every decision. Every moment. Every bit of her dignity.
Now she had a weapon. A first strike.
Lawyers arrived. Contracts printed. Financial transfers arranged. Every detail checked. The room moved with purpose. No words wasted. No unnecessary gestures. Only precision.
Two hours passed. The clock hit two in the afternoon.
The assistant knocked. “Mr. Kane. Mr. Richard Stone has arrived.”
Lucia turned toward the door. Alex nodded. “Send him in.”
Richard Stone walked in. Tall, slight stoop from age, hair gray and thinning. His face showed the weight of years, responsibility, frustration. Hands trembling slightly as he shook Alex’s hand.
Lucia stood silently. Professional. Neutral. A stranger. A business partner. Not Marco’s discarded ex–wife. She measured him with her eyes. Every micro–expression mattered.
Alex introduced her. “This is my partner, Ms. Smith.”
Richard nodded. His eyes lingered. He did not recognize her. That was perfect.
Alex gestured to the table. “Shall we proceed?”
Richard hesitated briefly, then sat. “I will be honest. Your call surprised me.”
Alex leaned forward, calm. “Efficiency is important.”
Richard gave a dry laugh. “Most businessmen like negotiation.”
“I prefer results,” Alex replied.
Lucia spoke for the first time. Her voice steady, low, controlled. “You want out. We can give you that. Freedom from Marco Hart. From all the pressure. From everything.”
Richard studied her, curiosity flickering in his tired eyes. “And why? Why are you helping me?”
“Because it is the right time,” she said simply. “Because he uses people. He discards loyalty. He thinks nothing matters beyond himself. He needs to understand consequences.”
Richard leaned back, silent. His hands hovered over the contracts. His jaw tightened. The weight of three decades pressed on him. Finally, he exhaled slowly.
“Forty years protecting this company. My grandfather built it. My father expanded it. And now Marco Hart takes it all for granted.”
Lucia watched him carefully. Every hesitation, every conflicted expression. She had lived under Marco’s control long enough to recognize fear and frustration.
Alex slid the contract across the table. “Eight hundred million. Cash. Full purchase. Immediate transfer. No delays.”
Richard picked it up, read, reread, paused, and exhaled. His face a mix of relief and anger. “This cuts all ties to Hart Industries?”
“Yes,” Alex said.
Richard chuckled softly. “He will panic. He will scramble. For thirty percent of his empire to vanish overnight.
