Chapter 187: How Long Until She Wakes Up?

Doctor Hensley checked in again that afternoon, and her expression was pleased.

"Your mother’s brain activity continues to be strong," she said. "I’m very encouraged by her progress. The crisis event seems to have passed completely. We’ll continue monitoring her, but I see no reason why she shouldn’t continue improving at her current rate."

"How long until she wakes up?" Lilith asked, the question she’d been afraid to ask since arriving.

Hensley was honest in her response: "We can’t know that. Sometimes comas last weeks. Sometimes months. Sometimes much longer. But your mother’s body is healing. That’s what matters right now."

That evening, Lilith found herself talking about the future in a way she hadn’t before.

"I think I’m going to stay at Blackwood," she said to her mother’s still face. "I know that’s not what I expected to say. I know you probably expected me to be counting down the days until I could get away from them. But something’s changed, Mama. And I’m beginning to think that maybe... maybe I’m not supposed to run. Maybe I’m supposed to stay."

She held her mother’s hand, pressing her thumb gently against the paper-thin skin of her mother’s palm.

"I don’t know if it’s love yet. I don’t know if what I’m feeling is genuine choice or just the mate bond making me feel like I’m choosing. But I know that when I think about leaving, about going back to Shadowmere, about never seeing them again....my heart breaks a little. And I think that means something. I think that means this is real, even if I don’t fully understand it yet."

The light was fading outside the window when Lilith finally acknowledged to herself what she’d known all morning: she’d been at the hospital for two full days. She’d fulfilled her promise to her mother. And now it was time to go back.

She stayed with her mother through the evening, talking less now, just sitting together in the quiet space of the hospital room.

When the final visiting hours ended, Lilith rose slowly, gathering her bag, preparing herself for the drive back to Blackwood Estate.

"I have to go now, Mama," she said, bending to kiss her mother’s forehead one last time. "But I’m coming back. I promise you that. And I’m going to keep talking to you. And I’m going to keep telling you about my life, because I think somewhere inside you’re listening."

She straightened up, looking down at her mother’s peaceful face.

"I’m going to build a life at Blackwood," she said quietly, as if saying it out loud made it more real. "I’m going to figure out what it means to be a mate to the brothers, and I’m going to do it all while making sure you know you’re not alone. That I’m not abandoning you. That you matter to me more than anything else ever will."

She stood there for another moment, then she turned and walked out of the room.
