Sebastian shook his head slowly. The same gesture Lucian had made. Reaching for a word that wasn’t there. "We don’t know. That’s the....we don’t know. We’ve never smelled anything like it."
"Our wolves know it," Lucian said. He wasn’t smiling now. His golden eyes were serious in a way that sat strangely on his face. "They recognise it somehow. Even though...."
He stopped.
"Even though what," she said.
The look between the brothers again.
"Even though they shouldn’t," Nicholas said quietly. "You’re wolfless. You shouldn’t have a scent that affects us at all. Let alone....." He stopped himself. Put his fork down. "It’s nothing to worry about."
"It doesn’t sound like nothing."
"It’s not nothing," Sebastian said at exactly the same moment.
Nicholas looked at him.
"She deserves to know," Sebastian said.
"Your scent is changing," Nicholas said finally. "It started three days ago. It’s....our wolves respond to it in a way we don’t fully understand. It calms them in a different way unlike before." He said the last two words like he was still deciding what they meant. "That shouldn’t be possible."
The table was very quiet.
Lilith looked at her coffee. At her hands. At the three brothers watching her with expressions ranging from Sebastian’s careful honesty to Lucian’s unusual seriousness to Nicholas’s controlled stillness.
"I don’t know what that means," she said.
"Neither do we," Nicholas said. "At least not yet."
That last word sat in the room like a promise.
Or a warning.
She picked up her coffee and drank it and didn’t say anything else.
That night she stood at her bathroom mirror and looked at herself for a long time.
She looked the same. Same face, same eyes, same dark hair. No visible difference. Nothing she could point to and say....there. That’s what changed.
She left the bathroom and then crashed on her bed.

*The Next Day*
The warmth under her skin wouldn’t go away.
It had been there all evening....this restless, crawling heat that had nothing to do with the temperature of the room. She’d pushed the blankets off. Pulled them back. Pushed them off again. Stared at the ceiling until the ceiling stopped being interesting, which had taken about thirty seconds.
She was still staring at it when the connecting door opened.
She sat up.
Sebastian came through first. Then Lucian. Then Nicholas, who closed the door behind him and stood there looking at her in the dark like he had all the time in the world.
She was in her sleep shirt. Nothing else. The fire had burned low and the moonlight was coming through the curtains and it was enough light to see all three of them....the way they were looking at her, that particular way they seam to be looking at her like they could see through her soul, and the warmth under her skin flared so hard and fast her breath caught.
Lucian tilted his head. "You look warm."
"I’m fine."
