Victoria nodded even though she felt like she was drowning.
Three more potential locations. West toward the ocean. North toward snow. East toward desert.
One of them had to be real.
One of them had to contain Thalia.
"I should go," Victoria said. "Find somewhere to rest before I keep searching."
"Be safe," Elena said. "And Victoria....thank you. For doing this. For refusing to give up on her."
Victoria closed the mirror before she could cry.
She gathered Thalia’s abandoned possessions....the cloak, the journal, the carved bone, and added them to her bag. Maybe they would be useful later. Maybe they contained clues she could decipher when she was not exhausted.
Victoria left the vine shelter and looked around the swamp.
She needed somewhere safe to rest. Somewhere she would not be eaten by whatever lived in these waters.
A sound made her turn.
Something was moving through the fog. Something large. Something that displaced water with each step.
Victoria called up defensive magic and backed toward the shelter.
The creature emerged from the fog slowly.
It was massive....at least twelve feet tall with skin that looked like swamp moss and bark. Its body was vaguely humanoid but constructed entirely of plant matter. Vines for muscles. Roots for bones. Eyes that glowed faintly green in the darkness.
A swamp guardian. An ancient spirit that protected wild magic territories from intrusion.
"Witch," it said, and its voice sounded like wind through leaves.
"I mean no harm," Victoria said carefully. "I’m searching for someone. Another witch. Dark magic user named Thalia Morvaine."
The guardian tilted its head. "The dark one left two days ago. Created portals. Fled."
Two days ago.
The timeline matched the quarry guardian’s information.
"Do you know where she went?" Victoria asked.
"Cannot say," the guardian said. "Portal magic leaves no trail in wild territories. But the dark one left warning."
Victoria felt cold despite the humid air. "What warning?"
"Said pursuers would come," the guardian said. "Said to tell them: the swamp remembers. The swamp knows. The swamp keeps secrets."
Victoria had no idea what that meant.
"Can you tell me anything else?" Victoria asked desperately. "Anything that might help me find her?"
The guardian was quiet for a long moment. Then it spoke again.
"The dark one seeks power from old places," it said. "Deals with entities that predate pack law and coven structure. If you wish to find her, seek where ancient magic lingers. Where the veil between worlds is thin."
That could be anywhere. Hundreds of locations across multiple territories.
But it was more information than Victoria had before.
"Thank you," Victoria said.
The guardian inclined its head. "Rest here if you wish. The shelter is warded. Protected. You will not be harmed while within its walls."
It turned and walked back into the fog, disappearing as silently as it had arrived.
Victoria stood alone in the swamp feeling the weight of exhaustion pressing down on her.
She needed to rest. Needed to eat. Needed to think clearly about her next move.
Victoria returned to the vine shelter and pulled out the meager food supplies she had packed. Dried meat. Hard bread. A flask of water that tasted faintly of preservation spells.
She ate mechanically, not tasting anything, just forcing fuel into her body.
Then she lay down on the moss sleeping mat and closed her eyes.
Just three hours, she told herself. Three hours of rest and then I keep searching.
But her mind would not quiet.
Images of Lilith’s dead body kept flashing behind her eyelids. The blood. The stillness. The absolute certainty that she had failed to save her niece.
I will bring you back, Victoria thought fiercely. I will find Thalia. I will make deals with death gods. I will do whatever it takes. Just hold on a little longer. Please.
*Four hours later*
