Chapter 398: The Blood Debt

"You knew I would come?" Victoria asked.

"Of course," Thalia said. "You’re desperate. Lilith is the last piece of family you have left that’s worth saving. You would do anything to bring her back. Cross any line. Make any deal. Even come to me."

"Will you help me?" Victoria asked.

Thalia was quiet for a long moment. Then: "That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether you’re willing to hear the rest of the truth," Thalia said. "Because Victoria, there’s more to the story. More about what really happened fifteen years ago. More about why the hunters attacked. More about our family and the Morvaine gift and the secret Mother died protecting."

Victoria felt ice slide down her spine. "What secret?"

"The reason we were hunted," Thalia said quietly. "The reason our family has been persecuted for generations. The reason Mother insisted we hide instead of using our power."

"Tell me," Victoria said.

Thalia walked to a shelf and pulled down an ancient book. The cover was made of leather that looked like it had been preserved for centuries. The pages were yellowed with age.

"This is the original Morvaine grimoire," Thalia said. "The one Mother kept hidden even from the coven elders. The one that tells the truth about where our gift came from."

Victoria’s hands shook as she took the book.

"Our gift is not from the Moon Goddess," Thalia said quietly. "It never was. That was a lie Mother told to make us seem less dangerous. Less threatening. Less like the abominations the hunters believed we were."

"Then where did it come from?" Victoria asked.

Thalia’s smile was terrible. "From something older. Something darker. Something that traded bond manipulation abilities to our ancestor in exchange for a price that our family has been paying ever since."

Victoria opened the grimoire with trembling hands.

The grimoire was written in Old Morvaine, the language their family had spoken before adapting to modern supernatural society. Victoria had learned it as a child, sitting in her mother’s study, copying symbols and phrases until they were burned into her memory.

But she had never seen this book before.

Had never known it existed.

Victoria turned the ancient pages carefully, scanning the faded ink, and felt her understanding of everything she thought she knew begin to crumble.

"In the year of ash and blood, when the first packs claimed the territories and covens bent knee to wolf law, the Morvaine line stood defiant.

We would not bow. Would not submit. Would not accept the bonds forced upon us by those who believed strength of fang made them our masters. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

But defiance without power is suicide.

So our ancestor....Morgana Morvaine, the first of our blood, made a choice that would echo through generations.

She sought power from the spaces between life and death. From the entities that existed before the Moon Goddess shaped the world. From something older than gods and more patient than time.

She found it in the Veil."

"The entity that dwelled in the Veil offered Morgana a bargain, the grimoire continued. Power over bonds. The ability to create connections where none existed. To strengthen ties that were weak. To sever bonds that seemed permanent. To manipulate the fundamental threads that tied all supernatural beings together.

In exchange, the entity demanded payment.

Not gold. Not service. Not worship.

Blood.

Every generation of Morvaines would owe a death to the Veil. One member of the bloodline would die before their time, consumed by the entity as payment for the power we wielded. Claimed when the Veil decided the debt was due.

Morgana agreed.

And our family has been paying the price ever since."
