Margaret offered a light smile. “But I didn’t receive them. When the engagement gifts arrived, I was away with Prince Theodore at the Ducal Palace. By the time I returned, I thought I’d go down to the storeroom to look at my things, but there was nothing there. I figured you’d hidden them away from me, so I went back to my rooms in a huff and didn’t even come out for dinner, remember?
“Father was clearly keeping it from me to begin with, or else, why wouldn’t he have mentioned it at all before putting them away himself? Now that they’ve vanished into thin air, what am I supposed to do about it? Getting worked up won’t bring them back.”
“You’re right, Margaret. This has nothing to do with you. It’s good you’re staying calm. I’m the one who’s overreacting,” Jasper said.
With that, he led the others out of the room.
Winter, who had been standing quietly to the side, finally spoke up, “I heard they searched the storeroom inside and out yesterday—almost tore up the floor looking for secret passages. They found nothing. I suppose they’ll have to call in specialists…”
She glanced at Margaret. “Ms. Campbell, Prince Theodore thinks highly of you. Perhaps you could ask him to send a few men over to investigate properly? All those treasures… It’s such a shame to lose them.”
“Alright, I know.”
Winter kept babbling, “The line of people carrying the gifts stretched down the street. Whoever stole them must have needed at least a small crew…”
“If you’re so concerned, why don’t you go help Jasper look for clues?” Margaret cut in, rubbing her temple.
Winter quickly backed down. “A mere maid like me couldn’t possibly…”
Seeing the look on Margaret’s face, she seemed to realize she’d overstepped. “I’ll just clear these dishes and wash them, and take your laundry down as well…”
With that, she finally slipped away.
Peace returned at last. Margaret stretched and was about to change her clothes to go out when a familiar voice sounded close by.
“The gifts I gave you went missing, and you’re this calm about it?”
Startled, Margaret turned to see Theodore dropping down from the roof behind her.

A rush of delight swept through her. “What are you doing here?”
Theodore walked toward her slowly as he spoke, “I missed you, so I came.”
She quickly pulled him inside her room. “You’re a prince! Slipping in here unnoticed isn’t proper. If anyone saw you, they’d think-”
“Think what?”
Theodore smiled and wrapped an arm around her waist. “That I visit you often… and often like this?”
Their faces were very close now. Even with the door shut, Margaret felt a flutter of nerves. Was he always this forward?
Theodore gently tapped her nose. “You blush so easily. What will you do after we’re married?”
Margaret pushed him away. “You-
Still smiling, Theodore settled into a nearby chair. “Let’s be serious. Why aren’t you more upset about the missing gifts?”
“They’re not missing…” Margaret muttered under her breath.
So much for missing me–he is really here about the vanished engagement gifts.
Theodore raised a brow, then suddenly pulled her into his lap. “So it was you?”
Margaret stated plainly, “You said yourself they were for me alone. They were mine to begin with, weren’t they?”
A flicker of surprise lit Theodore’s eyes. “Do you know I already sent men to help look?”
He narrowed his gaze. “And every one of them came back empty–handed.”
Margaret’s lips twitched. “And?”
“How did you manage it?” Theodore studied her curiously.
He was beginning to realize how little he truly knew this girl.
He’d completely underestimated her.
“To move everything overnight–no, not even a full night–without a trace. Some of those chests were filled with gold. Do you have any idea how heavy that was? Aren’t you going to tell me how you did it?”

His voice, soft and low, seemed to melt her bones. “It’s a secret.”
“Not even to me?”
Margaret was about to refuse when his lips met hers.
“Mmm… secret…”
It was a long moment before Theodore pulled back. “Not even to me?”
He repeated the question, his voice now barely a whisper.
With only the two of them in the room and the space between them shrinking, the air grew charged.
A faint blush colored Margaret’s cheeks. “I told you, it’s a secret…”
“All right.”
