Julie sighed helplessly. “If I hadn’t already taken your silver, I’d leave you to your own devices.”

She studied his furrowed brow closely. “Now that I look properly, you do seem even more familiar.

“Oh, well. Since you remind me of him, I’ll brew another bowl for you. If this still doesn’t bring the fever down, there’s nothing more I can do.”

She turned and busied herself making another batch.

By the time she’d finally gotten him to swallow it all, the sky had already turned pale gray with dawn.

She yawned heavily.

There was no sleep for her tonight.

Just then, the main door creaked open again. “Honestly, Julie? The sun’s already up, and you still have the lamp lit. Did you stay up all night?”

It was Lisa.

She strode inside, then froze in shock a few steps in. “Julie? What’s going on? Why is there a man here?”

Julie turned around calmly. “He came by in the middle of the night with injuries. He paid me well, so I stayed to look after him.”

“You stayed alone in the same room with a man all night?” Lisa rushed to shut the door, horrified. “You fool! You’re still unmarried. If anyone saw you alone with a strange man till dawn, your reputation would be ruined forever. How will you ever make a good match now?”

Julie blinked blankly. “It’s not that serious. This is a medicine shop after all. He came seeking treatment…”

‘Decent folk come by daylight,” Lisa argued. “No one wanders in at midnight. This man looks suspicious at best. You never should have let him in.”

Julie scratched her head awkwardly. “But I took his coin, I couldn’t just leave him to die. Think of Ms. Campbell–if she’d turned us away when we had nowhere to go, we wouldn’t have the life we have now.”

“Ms. Campbell is clever and capable,” Lisa chattered on. “We’re just ordinary girls with no special skills.”

She walked over to the unconscious man’s bedside. “Hey, wake up. Dawn’s broken; you need to leave now.”

The man’s brows twitched, and he slowly opened his eyes.

He looked perfectly calm, as if he’d heard every word of their conversation. He rose weakly and stumbled toward the door.

Julie hurried after him. “If you can’t walk properly, you can rent a room next door. The silver you gave is more than enough to cover the fare. I can go arrange it for you.”

“Thank you for your kindness, but no need.” He headed straight for the door.

Spotting patrolling guards filling the street outside, he quickly stepped back inside. “I’ll stay a while longer, then.”

Julie nodded. “Come on, I’ll show you the way.”

“Is there a back exit?” he asked.

Julie said, “There is, but why go out the back all of a sudden?”

Lisa cut in sharply, “Dressed like that, you look nothing but shady. Who are you anyway? Are you a thief?”

The man said, “My name is Herman Cole. I am no thief.”

“If you’re not a thief, why dress all in black?” Lisa pressed.

Herman said flatly, “If you refuse, I shall take my leave and trouble you no further.”

With that, he glanced around and headed toward the back door.

Julie hurried to follow, but Lisa pulled her back. “What are you doing? This man could be a robber. We can’t keep helping him.”

“He’s no thief. I know him,” Julie said firmly. “He’s from the village next to ours.”

Lisa looked confused. “The next village? I’ve never seen him before.”

“Our villages are far apart, and we rarely mixed with their folk,” Julie explained. “I remember him because he saved me once when I fell into the river. We played together back then. Don’t you remember that?”

She rushed after him at once. “Herman! It’s me, Julie. Do you remember me?”

No wonder he looks familiar.

I thought he merely resembled Herman, but it’s him all along,

Herman turned slowly, his expression unreadable.
