Outside, a crowd of physicians stood in terrified silence. The door swung open, and Norma emerged, her expression icy.

The physicians needed no further prompting. Snatching up their medical kits, they scrambled to their feet and hurried away.

Norma shot a sharp glance at the servants lingering nearby, and they, too, quickly retreated to a respectful distance.

She closed the heavy doors herself and turned toward the ornate screen at the room’s far end. “Have you finished your tantrum? Do you want the entire palace to know you’re throwing a fit?”

Behind the screen, Christopher lay pale and gaunt on his bed. “Mother, they’re worthless. Why spare them? They should be dragged out and beheaded!”
