Chapter 285 Bracelet
“I had hoped our little misunderstanding would blow over once we both cooled off. We could’ve talked it out, cleared the air. But during that cooling–off period, he met you. With you in the picture, the rift between us only widened. Slowly, he stopped coming to see me altogether. It finally dawned on me–men need an olive branch. So here I am, swallowing my pride.
“Truth is, it was a tiny spat. Just two stubborn people too proud to bend. You said it yourself—I’m nearly nineteen, old enough to marry. And you know I’ve been waiting for him. But have you considered that he’s well past twenty? Who do you think he’s been waiting for?”
Myrna’s eyes narrowed meaningfully. “You’re a clever woman, Ms. Campbell. I’m sure you catch my drift.”
A cold laugh escaped Margaret. “So all this is just to tell me Ted proposed to you to make me jealous?”
“Ted. How cozy.”
“He asked me to call him that!” Margaret shot back, meeting Myrna’s gaze without flinching.
Discomfort prickled through Myrna. She’d expected at least some hesitation, some retreat.
Instead, Margaret stood her ground, unyielding.
“I’ve always been direct. No simpering or beating around the bush. Guess it’s how I was raised.” Myrna pressed on.
Margaret retorted sharply, “And I’ve never been one for preaching. Must be how I was raised.
“If you’re here to convince me to walk away from Ted, save your breath. I’ll get the truth straight from
him.
Myrna’s smile finally froze. “Really, Ms. Campbell, I’ve made myself perfectly clear. Why torture yourself?”
“I’ve made myself perfectly clear, too, Margaret countered. “So why keep harping on it?”
Myrna made a derisive snort. “People used to say the Prime Minister’s daughter was timid, a pushover. Seems that was all an act. The real you has quite the sharp tongue”
“You’ve known me long enough, Ms. Hickman, Spare me the flattery.”
With that, Margaret turned and strode out of the study.

Myrna followed at a leisurely pace, pure malice now unconcealed in her eyes.
“Since you’re not waiting, neither will I. Let’s head back together–it’s getting dark.”
Margaret quickened her steps, desperate to put distance between herself and the other woman.
But just as she reached the main gate, two breathless maids came rushing after them.
“Ms. Campbell, wait!”

Ms. Hickman, please!”
Margaret stopped.
One maid darted in front of her, while the other blocked Myrna’s path.
Panting heavily, they struggled to speak til Myrna’s personal maid stepped forward. “What’s the hurry?”
“Is Theodore back?” Myrna asked, a hint of hope in her voice.
The maid before her shook her head. “Yes, he’s returned, but-”
“Where is he?” Myrna cut in. “Ms. Campbell and I have been waiting. Since he’s back, take us to him.”
With that, she shot Margaret a triumphant look.
Ignoring her, Margaret addressed the maid in front of her, “Why the panic? Has something bad happened?”
The girl nodded, still catching her breath. “Yes. His Highness returned through the rear gate and went straight to his study. Then…” She gulped air. “Then he found his favorite bracelet missing! It was kept in the study cabinet. Since only you two ladies were in there, w–we came running.”
Margaret’s face paled slightly.
Myrna’s expression also darkened. “Did he send you to interrogate us? Does he suspect one of us stole it?”
Both maids shook their heads in unison, waving their hands frantically. One of them said, “O–Oh, no! We heard the news and came on our own. We’re so sorry! That bracelet means everything to His Highness. If it’s not found, we’ll all be in terrible trouble!
“Please, we’re just asking if either of you saw it. Any hint would help! Without it, our heads are on the line!” the other maid begged, tears welling.
