pter 289 I Trust You
Honestly, Margaret couldn’t help feeling a pang of bitterness.
But what could she possibly do about it?
Randall had been his savior once, the one who saw his potential and lifted him up. Now he was gone, leaving his death wish.
As for General Hickman’s Estate, everyone there looked to Theodore as their leader. With the weight of authority in his hands, it was only natural he’d show them due consideration.
Still, the unease lingered in Margaret’s heart.
‘Since they’ve asked, you really should go,” she said softly.
Theodore’s arms tightened around her, almost crushing her waist.
Breath grew scarce.
“I don’t like her, truly I don’t,” he murmured against her ear.
“But you’ll have to look after her for the rest of her life…”
A pause hung between them. “It’s merely ensuring her well–being. She has her own family. They’ll see her through.”
Just then, Myrna’s voice carried from outside the door, sharp and impatient. “Theodore? Cyan, don’t stop me–I need to speak with Theodore!”
A light scoff followed. “Still in there? That girl… she wouldn’t still be tattling on me, would she?”
Without waiting for a reply, the door swung open. “Since you’re both quiet, I’ll let myself in.”
The moment she stepped inside, Myrna froze. Margaret was leaning down, her lips pressed firmly to Theodore’s.
Not only that–catching sight of their visitor, Margaret deliberately slid her arms around Theodore’s neck, holding him close.
Myrna’s eyes widened in shock. “You-”
Finally drawing back, Margaret turned with a cool glance. “What was that, Ms. Hickman? We didn’t quite
catch it.”
Myrna’s mouth twitched. “So this is why Theodore proposed to a girl like you. You’re the bold type. I see. I never imagined-”
Before she could finish, Theodore’s hand settled at Margaret’s waist, pulling her back against him. His mouth captured hers once more in a deliberate, lingering kiss.
Margaret’s eyes flew open in surprise.

I was only staking my claim–what is he doing now? And right in front of her!
Theodore paid no mind to their audience, deepening the kiss until he finally released her. “Say what you came to say, Myrna. If it’s nothing, you may leave.”
Myrna’s face had flushed with anger. Clenching her fists, she fought back the jealousy rising in her throat. “Theodore, it’s broad daylight. Don’t let her lead you astray…”
She grasped for a change of subject. “I came about the bracelet. Everyone says it’s missing. Only the two of us were in the study–I know I didn’t take it, but I can’t vouch for anyone else. Why not have your people search the areas we each passed through? Maybe it’ll turn up.”
Settling comfortably in Theodore’s lap, Margaret made no move to rise. “Do you suspect me, Ted?”
“I trust you.” Theodore replied, his tone softening.
A slight smile touched Margaret’s lips. “Then perhaps they should focus on the places Ms. Hickman has been. I’m sure she’s no thief… but she does have a maid with her.”
“Very well.” Theodore gave a brief nod, summoning a servant to begin the search at once.
Watching the intimate scene unfold, Myrna felt her composure fraying.
She forced a strained smile. “You can’t possibly suspect me, Theodore? We grew up like siblings–have I ever stolen so much as a pin? Even my maid is all rough edges, never the sneaky type…”
Her gaze sharpened, shifting to Margaret. “Did Ms. Campbell say something to you? We had a little… disagreement earlier. Surely she wouldn’t stoop to tattling over something so petty?”
Margaret opened her mouth to reply, but Theodore spoke first, “She doesn’t tattle. My trust in her is my
own.”

The smile on Myrna’s face finally stiffened completely. “Theodore… are you still angry with me?”
Her eyes moved from Margaret to Theodore, lingering on how closely they held each other. An ache
twisted inside her.
“I’ve been reaching out again and again—that’s me admitting I was wrong. I know you hate backing down, but… I truly want to mend things between us.”
She drew a steadying breath. “You say your bracelet’s gone, and you trust her so completely. That leaves only me under suspicion, doesn’t it? Fine. I’ll stay tonight–until the bracelet is found. As for Ms. Campbell, since you have such faith in her, send her home. No need to keep her here and ruin her reputation.”
Margaret frowned. “Why would my staying damage my reputation, while yours remains untouched?”
“I have my own room here. I’ve stayed over many times. Everyone knows the bond between Theodore and me–my reputation has never suffered. You needn’t worry on my account,” Myrna answered smoothly.
A shadow crossed Margaret’s face.

Myrna pressed on. “Of course, I didn’t take it. I’ve nothing to hide. You can keep me here ten days or a month–that bracelet won’t be found on me.”
