Margaret smiled faintly, “As a matter of fact, there is one small favor I might have to ask of you in the future.”

“Anything,” Darren replied instantly, his posture straightening with attention.

“Nothing so serious, I assure you.” Her smile widened slightly. “It’s just that I may be leaving Breston at some point. When that happens, I’ll need someone reliable to keep an eye on my two pharmacies here. Would you be willing to help?”

Darren’s expression shifted, becoming thoughtful and somewhat inscrutable. “You’re thinking of leaving Breston, Ms. Campbell?”

“Yes.

“But you…” Darren began, concern etching his features.

Margaret’s tone took on a conspiratorial edge. “This idea of mine is a secret for now, shared only with you. Can I count on your discretion?”

“You saved my life, Ms. Campbell. My lips are sealed,” Darren declared with firm conviction.

A sigh escaped him as he continued, “Though I must say, a woman of your talents deserves more than being a mere concubine. Still, Prince Theodore-”

“Let’s not discuss him. If that’s all, we’ll leave it here for today,” Margaret interjected, her voice losing its earlier warmth.

The topic was a sore spot, a persistent ache born of a love she was determined to leave behind.

Seeing her reluctance, Darren merely nodded. “Alright.”

He turned to leave, but paused mid–stride.

Looking back, he said, “Should you ever need my assistance in the future, for anything at all, don’t hesitate to ask. Though you’re young enough to be my granddaughter, I consider you a true friend.”

A genuine smile touched Margaret’s lips. “Then you might find yourself quite busy, Mr. Kingston.”

“The honor would be entirely mine,” Darren said with a slight bow before finally taking his leave.

Alone, Margaret ascended to the second floor and settled in with the recent ledger.

The figures from the neighboring shop were impressive, showing profits that had doubled since the previous month.

The pharmacy’s business remained steady, but she anticipated a similar surge once Darren’s new batch of supplies hit the shelves.
