Chapter 307 Why Should I Be Downcast?

After a brief silence, Keith continued, his tone laced with a hint of amusement, “A pampered socialite like you, raised in luxury–how often have you even left Breston? No matter. I’ll help you navigate what comes next.”
Margaret studied him intently. “You seem almost… pleased.”
A faint stiffness passed through his frame, though his expression remained unreadable. “How could I be happy about something so sad? You’re mistaken.”
She let her gaze drop, offering no further comment.
“I expected you to be more downcast. Yet here you are, surprisingly resilient. It’s good you’re not drowning in it,” Keith said, shifting the topic.
“Why should I be downcast? This was never my decision to make, so the fault isn’t mine. Since it’s not because of me, why should I fall apart? Life is full of hardships. Not ending up with the person you like doesn’t mean your life is over,” Margaret replied, her voice steady.
“It’s good you see it that way.”
A faint smile touched her lips. “I just wonder… are all men so fickle? First, Christopher claimed he could care for two women, and now it seems Theodore’s heart has room for two as well.”
“I disagree. Christopher’s heart probably had room for a whole crowd,” Keith said with a light chuckle.
She shot him a withering look.
His smile softened. “Enough of the gloomy talk. If you’ve made your choice, I’ll support you fully. But… didn’t Prince Theodore assign you a shadow? How will you manage under his nose…”
“Don’t worry about Baxter. He knows his boundaries and wouldn’t eavesdrop. If he did, I’d feel like a prisoner all day.”
She spoke the truth.
While Baxter’s exact movements were hard to pin down, he maintained a respectful distance.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken so long to discover the intruder hidden in her room last time.
Theodore must have given him strict instructions about privacy, given propriety between men and women.
Keith raised an eyebrow. “That works, then.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Julie finally dragged herself away from Sweet Breeze Dining, where she had spent the entire afternoon.

Returning to the pharmacy, she found Margaret already gone.

A hot dinner, sent over by Lisa, awaited her. Julie devoured the meal with gusto, then promptly packed another portion before heading back to the inn’s third floor.
“Herman! I brought you dinner,” she announced, knocking.
The door swung open, revealing his cool, aloof face. “Back again?”
It was a fair question–she’d practically camped in his room all afternoon, only to return with food shortly after leaving.
Ignoring his comment, Julie bustled inside and began unpacking the meal on the table. “If I didn’t come, what would you eat tonight? The place is packed–you’d wait for hours. This is the chef’s special. You’re lucky I saved some for you!”
Herman frowned. “I plan to leave tomorrow.”
Julie froze. “So soon? The people looking for you might still be out there. Maybe stay hidden another month or two, I could-”
“I’ve overstayed my welcome. I can’t hide forever.”
Avoiding his eyes, she gestured for him to eat.
He took a seat, his gaze lingering on her as he ate. “Thank you for looking after me all this time.”
“What are you thanking me for? You paid your way. You’d have managed fine without me…”
“Perhaps. But you were the one who took me in,” he said.
As Herman spoke, he speared a piece of chicken with his fork. The moment it touched his tongue, his eyes widened slightly. “This chicken… it’s incredibly tender.”
“Told you it was good! It’s Lisa’s new recipe–clay pot roasted chicken. I knew you’d like it the second I tasted it. If you want, I can ask her to make it again tomorrow
Julie watched him eagerly. “You really should stay a bit longer. The money you paid covers more time, and leaving now would be a waste. Besides, where else could you get food like this every day?”
Herman took another bite of the chicken, followed by a mouthful of steamed barley. Each flavor was a revelation, clearing the usual guarded look from his eyes.
“Even better than yesterday’s spicy poached beef in broth.”
Julie protested, resting her chin in her hands, “No way! I liked the beef better. So? What do you say? Stay a little longer-”
Suddenly, Herman moved–a blur of motion. He shoved her aside and slammed her to the floor, his body shielding hers.
