Chapter 81 Awakening the Women

He spoke as if he were boasting of some great triumph, the village leader’s eyes blazing with excitement. But when he looked at Margaret, his gaze held nothing but contempt.

“You wear yourselves out like this, thinking you’re some kind of saviors? What’s the point? Those women have been used to living like animals for years. Do you see any of them daring to fight back?”

He then smiled and turned his gaze toward Amber and the others.

“Sooner or later, those dozen or so young girls will end up just like them. That’s their fate! That’s the fate of all women in this world! Women are born to be our playthings, born to be tied up like cattle, born to be properly broken in. And you—”

He suddenly glared at Margaret. “Little girl, I can tell you’ve never been broken in at all. That’s fine, though. We have some buyers who love nothing more than breaking women with spirit like you. Otherwise, why would we bother raising those women like decent folk? If they had no fire in them from birth, they wouldn’t fetch a good price.”

The village leader spoke with such venom that every word cut into Margaret’s heart like a knife.

They stung the hearts of every woman present, too.

The men, meanwhile, just stood there smugly. Even though a good number of villagers had already fallen, they still felt no fear.

Many of them glared at Margaret and Theodore with pure hatred, as if the moment the two let their guard down, they would rush over and tear them apart.

By then, Amber and the others had knives pressed to their throats. They had no strength left to resist — only tears streaming down their faces, a pitiful sight indeed.

Along the street, near nearly every window of every house, a figure seemed to be hiding.

Some of those women peeked out, some stayed behind the shutters, but they only watched in silence. showing no emotion at all.

Just as the village leader had said, there were more women than men in this village.

And just as he had said, those women did not even have the courage to step outside. Even then, no one knew how long they had been secretly watching from their windows.

A desolate air spread through the whole village. Margaret almost wondered whether she should stay there at all, or whether she should drag Theodore into holding on any longer.

If they had been in their usual condition, they would not have feared even another hundred or two hundred villagers.

But by then, the two of them were both exhausted.

Then Theodore suddenly tightened his grip on her hand and said. “Then we’ll take them all with us.

“Fine! Then we’ll see this through to the end with them! Worst comes to worst, we’ll both end up hurt, but no matter how badly you’re hurt, I can heal you. When it really becomes too much, we’ll pull out!”

With that, she looked over at Amber and the others not far away. “I’ll leave them to you in a moment.”

“Mm.”

Seeing that the two still did not plan to give up, the village leader shouted angrily, “Are you really going to make my Maplewood Village run red with blood? Or do you not believe that we’ll kill those little wenches?”

“I believe you! But I don’t believe that a group of women who are mothers could stand by and watch their own daughters follow in their footsteps!”

Margaret raised her hands, ready to strike at any moment. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the alley entrance not far away, where Zoe had been hiding and trembling for a very long time.

Zoe’s gaze was firm, and behind her followed a group of figures with equally determined eyes.

Margaret scanned the crowd and looked at the group of women who had been hiding at the very back. “You all saw that, didn’t you? Heard it?”

“You came here from all over the world. Maybe most of you had unhappy childhoods, maybe you were raised to see men as your masters. But I don’t believe that not a single one of you has ever felt happiness! There must be some of you who once had parents and family who loved you! But what are you here? You’re not even human! In their eyes, you’re nothing but a herd of cattle!”

Countless women turned to look at her, but not a single sound dared to leave their lips.

Margaret continued, “They came into this world through women, yet they won’t let those women live freely! The whole world rests beneath women’s skirts, yet everywhere it scorns the ones who wear those skirts! What kind of twisted nonsense is that?

“Nonsense like ‘daughters must obey their fathers, wives must obey their husbands! Women have never been merchandise, let alone something those men can trample on as they please!

“You need to know, you never need to depend on anyone to live. Even though you are women, you can still have your own lives! You are not animals. The real animals are the evil people who trafficked you, the Scourge of this world that treats you like goods!

“Being born human is not your fault. Being born a woman is even less your fault! The fault lies with the beasts who gave birth to you and then sold you!”
