Chapter 251 A Night of Firelight and Grilled Meat
+5 Pearls
Zachary planned to grill meat for dinner, so he sent Matthew to invite Yael and the others over.
Naturally, that was not the only reason. The wheat they had just traded for still had to be ground into flour. Matthew had already spent the afternoon chopping bamboo, holding a pot steady, and pouring melted candle wax. His arms had worked enough for one day.
Zachary sliced a large basin of lamb, then mixed in thick shellfish sauce, scallions, ginger, seasoning powder, and cumin.
After cracking in a few eggs, he turned the meat until every piece was coated, then set it aside to marinate for thirty minutes.
Jaden and Taylor came back not long after. As soon as they heard barbecue was on the menu, they rushed over to help. One sat down to peel potatoes, while the other carried the mushrooms away to wash.
By the time Yael and the others arrived, Zachary was almost ready to thread the meat onto skewers.
Matthew gave them no time to get comfortable. He lifted his hand and pointed toward the stone mill.
Two heavy sacks of wheat sat right beside it.
The meaning could not have been clearer. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and got to work.
Before long, lamb fat dripped into the fire with a sharp hiss. Once the chili powder and cumin were scattered over the meat, a deep, smoky aroma burst into the air. It wrapped around everyone, making it impossible to think about anything except food.
The stone mill spun faster and faster, looking as if it might shake itself loose. Yael stood nearby, still yelling, “Faster!”
When the first round of skewers was almost ready, Zachary lifted one and brought it to Matthew’s hips. “Try this.”
Matthew bent his head and took a bite. “It’s good.”
୮
The answer came too naturally.
Zachary could almost hear the automatic click in Matthew’s head. As long as his mate asked him to taste something, those two words were ready to come out.
Zachary’s eyes curved with amusement. “Tell me what is good about it.”
Matthew paused and thought with surprising seriousness. “It smells nice.”
“What else?” Zachary prompted, barely holding back his smile.
Matthew frowned faintly, as if the question required great effort. “The meat is tender.”

“Only that?”
Matthew searched for more words and failed. “Mm…”
Zachary almost laughed out loud. Matthew looked the same as he did when he faced a difficult math problem.
Zachary brushed the back of his hand against Matthew’s cheek. “Alright, I will stop making things difficult for you. Go pick some leaves so we can line the plates.”
He glanced toward the stone mill. “Call Yael and the others over, too. It is time to eat.”
Matthew looked at him with complete certainty. “Everything you make tastes good.”
Yael caught that line and immediately drifted closer with a wicked grin. “Great. Tomorrow, I will catch a few bugs and ask Zachary to cook them into soup for you.”
Matthew gave him a cold glare.
Quincy tore off a piece of hot grilled lamb and shoved it into Yael’s mouth. “Behave.”
Yael laughed even harder around the food.
Because of the cumin, everyone ate more than usual. Several large basins of ingredients disappeared before long, leaving nothing behind.
After dinner, Zachary brought out the candles they had finished making earlier.
Yael picked one up and turned it around in his hand. “What is this?”
“A candle,” Matthew replied in a flat voice, clearly still remembering the bug soup joke. “Eat it.”
“Hey!” Zachary grabbed Yael’s wrist before the candle reached his mouth. “That is not food. It is for light.”
Yael stopped instantly.
Matthew wanted very much to push the candle the rest of the way into Yael’s mouth. With Quincy and Taylor nearby, he forced himself to hold back.

Everyone gathered around the little flame. Their faces held the same bright excitement they had shown when they first discovered flame seeds. When they looked at Zachary again, their eyes were filled with pure admiration.
After Yael and the others left, the space outside the cave settled back into silence.
Jaden sat on a stool with one elbow resting on the stone table. He stared at the candle burning in front of him with such solemn focus that it seemed as if he were studying some ancient secret.
Zachary found the rope he had used before for measurements. “Jaden, come here for a moment.”
Jaden stood up at once. “Sire, what do you need?”
Zachary answered, “The weather is warming up. I am going to make you a new set of clothes.”

Matthew did not even leave to wash up. He leaned against the stone wall and quietly watched Zachary measure the cub,
Once Zachary finished, he sent Jaden off to sleep. Then he sat down and began sorting through the beast hides they had received that day.
Matthew remained beside him without a word.
Only when Zachary finished and was about to wash up did Matthew finally ask, “You are not going to measure me?”
Zachary turned back in confusion. “Huh?”
Matthew picked up the rope from the table. A faint trace of grievance appeared on his face. “You have not measured me.”
Zachary understood at once, and laughter softened his eyes. “I do not need to.”
Matthew pressed his lips together. Even the shine in his golden eyes seemed to fade.
Zachary reached out and gently pushed up the corners of Matthew’s mouth with one finger. “I already know your measurements.”
He stepped closer, wrapped both arms around Matthew’s waist, lifted his face, and smiled. “I hold you like this every day. How could I not know?”
