“It took me two years from the time you left but yes.”

“Why so long?”

“The first six months after January left me, I was more concerned with finding her. For a brief period, we considered perhaps Ziogas had taken the three of you but there was no link. The fact your entire house was packed up and emptied spoke to a plan which we felt was weeks in the making. Learning today you had the feds with their ace team boxing you up and sending you away, was enlightening. Then Glenn, who was the only person who knew the truth behind my artifice, had a child dropped on him. We had a new situation to navigate. He relocated permanently to New York out of London because his ex’s family were causing problems and it was time for him to have a fresh start. It took another year before we finally set a trap with bait big enough she couldn’t resist. We caught her breaking into our home when she thought we were all out of the country. We boarded a plane which she saw off. We took off. We landed back ten minutes later

and followed her and her father back to the house. She

used the code she’d stolen to get into the house, but she didn’t know the right code to the security cabinet. We let

her think she knew what it was. We stood in our security bunker not twenty feet from her, watching on the screen as she set off the alarms. Guards rushed in. The police were called. A full investigation was done. It took a year after that for her to go through the trial with all evidence presented. She and her father were both sentenced for corporate espionage, and she was the one who got more time because she was the mastermind behind it all. She wanted to take her grandfather’s company to the next level but couldn’t do it without the work my grandfather, Glenn and I all worked so hard to achieve. Her grandfather suggested the spying, and she did as she was told and then some.”

“You put her in jail?” Terrance asked seriously.

January walked to the window and leaned against it, her head against the pane of glass as she stared unseeing out into the front yard where five cars all sat.

“Yes. She’s in prison. She was given five years for her

role in the game of espionage. As you can imagine my grandfather was quite surprised. When he was notified of their arrest he was quite apologetic.”

Why?”

Again, the question came from her father. The conversation was continuing without her.

“Because I’d been telling him for years and he wouldn’t believe me. He was supposed to entrust me to take over his company someday and he didn’t trust my judge of character, which is something we discussed at great length more than once. He has learned his lesson.”

Thisbe spoke softly, “he’s going to be so upset when he finds out his refusal to accept your decision and the fact you needed to be so secretive is what cause January to leave.”

“What a clusterfuck.”

The comment from her mother made January’s lip curl up in a sneer.

“Yes. It was a clusterfuck, but it is behind us. I am working diligently on being the leader in my family I need to be. I have been slowly assimilating some of the duties of my grandfather as he transitions towards retirement.”

The dry question from her father made January huff a laugh.

“You knew the word before Davis, I presume?”

“Yeah. It’s how I knew to call him. My brother was working on a joint taskforce when he suffered his heart attack and Davis was part of it. My brother one night was going off about all the different names you give the heads of your mafia.”

“You?”

“Gangsters,” her father said without a hint of fear in his voice. “You can call it what you want, business or family, but it’s a mafia.”

“Fine.” Gulliver rolled his shoulders out. “We will have this discussion. How much of your house is wired?”

“The house isn’t wired.”

He gave a laugh. “Does Davis know this address?” 4/7

“Then this house is wired.”

“Why would he wire this house?”

“In the event of something like today. Me coming here or me calling January. I bet hers, yours, Analia’s phones are all tapped. I bet if there is a houseline here, it’s bugged. I’d stake my entire fortune that your vehicles all have tags.”

“What would he have to gain?”

“A promotion if he thinks he can get dirt on me. There is none by the way. I’m clean as a whistle. I run a legitimate enterprise.” He looked at Thisbe, “Thisbe, can you go. outside and ask Ioannis and Adonis to come inside and

to bring their kits. Ask a couple other guys to back them up.”

“Kits?”

“Mm,” he nodded. “I’ll prove my point, unless you have objections.”

January wanted to smack her father for being so

reasonable. She spoke up, “if he is listening in, he’s going to automatically consider that you’re checking for devices so you can hide things.”

“Or he’s going to understand that illegally tapping a person’s home without their consent, spying on them, listening to their conversations and their everyday lives is against the law, an invasion of your privacy and a betrayal of your trust. Are you truly quite content to know that at the very least he’s been listening to your conversations for years? Intimate conversations between the two of you,” he pointed to where Analia was on her husband’s lap, “moments stolen when you thought you were alone in your home?” When Analia blushed hot red he looked to January, “or when you were singing off–key or crying when you thought you were alone or when you were arguing with your parents over anything. Families are messy and ones who love as deeply as this one also argue and fight. Imagine the laughter the FBI had over the fact your daughter brought a skunk into the house.”

As she shifted uncomfortably, turning to face him his face

set in stone.

“Well, there’s probably nothing in here anyway,” she folded her arms over her chest defiantly.

“For your sake I hope you’re correct. As it is, I’ve already revealed far too much to them with the conversation

we’ve had thus far considering I set a woman up knowing she’d take the bait and then sued her for it.” He shrugged, “not that I care. My lawyer already answered all those questions in court.”

Two men came into the space with Thisbe and January recognized both men as people who’d been assigned to her more than once. The one she knew as Ioannis was sliding earphones onto his head and was adjusting a device that he was barely balancing in his hands. The other man, Adonis, was holding something no bigger than a cell phone and was waving it around as soon as Gulliver gave him the nod to begin.

Instantly the device in Adonis‘ hand started screeching and January noted the way her father sat up straighter, as if offended and furious. Adonis looked at Ioannis who adjusted his own device and pointed it towards a 1/7 thermostat.

“Check them all. No exceptions.” Gulliver ordered the two

other men.

When the first thermostat was pulled open and a tiny

device was pulled out, January felt her nose stinging with the need to cry at the betrayal of their trust but before she could truly react, the device in Adonis‘ hand began sounding again. He looked at Ioannis and they both looked up to a vent which was set up for the HVAC unit.

Gulliver, easily the tallest man in the room, walked to the vent and twisted it downward and pulled it out. He yanked hard on a wired in device, “this is video.” He held up the tiny camera, “a camera hardwired into the electricity in your home. He has cameras in your home, Terrance. You question me whether or not your daughter was ever in danger in my home, and the answer was a resounding no and yet, in your home, she is at risk of her being recorded and exploited. What are the chances you’ve walked through this room in your underwear, January? How many times does our daughter come into this room naked perhaps after a bath or getting ready for bed? I know Mitsos is six, approaching seven, and he loves to wander around wearing barely nothing. Is Kaylee any different?”

She shook her head wordlessly as she paled and wrapped her arms around her belly. How many times had her daughter done exactly that?

“So, the FBI has video of our daughter naked. Nice. I hope that fucker or one of his friends are still listening because I feel the litigation from this unsanctioned surveyance is going to be a nightmare for the American government. Did you sign anything giving them authorization to record you?”

“No. I’ve signed nothing.” Terrance shook his head.

“They gave us everything already done. Driver’s licenses, banking stuff, everything.”

“They did it as a tradeoff thinking that perhaps January knew more than she let on and was hiding information from them. They made you feel secure, trustworthy but they were using you. Joke was on them because I know for a fact my wife knew nothing.”

“Not your wife.” She mumbled angrily, hating that he was so smug in the moment.
