Gulliver entered his hotel suite with his wife and daughter and felt an unbidden rage at the situation they were finding themselves in. The entire town where January called home for the last eight years was rallying around them and the men in the town were happy to work with Gulliver. They’d driven the federal agents right out of town. 1

The principal of the school was fired thanks to one phone call to the district head which outlined how he allowed officers to interrogate and terrorize two students and he was sent packing. The motorcycle gang which had shown up near the end of the day gave him an escort right out of the town since while he worked in their town, he lived in the next one over.

“Mom, is Dad angry?”

The quiet question from Kaylee behind him made him close his eyes and shake his head, turning back to look at his daughter who was clutching her mother’s hand tightly.

He took her hands in his and kissed her teeny knuckles. “No, sweetie, I am not angry.”

“But you didn’t barely talk to me at all in the car and you didn’t

“Sometimes dads have bad days the same way moms do,” January said as she flung herself backwards letting her legs dangle over the arm of the sofa.

He shook his head at her antics. “Tired, my love?”

“Agreeing to let you and Thisbe both work in my space today was a mistake. You barked out orders interrupting my every thought and the few moments where I could focus, Thisbe was squealing about how inspired my work made her. I got nothing accomplished, Gulliver. Nothing.

“We’ll need to make sure you have a bigger workspace,” he hoisted Kaylee up in his arms, “as for you, I am not angry with you. Your mom is right. I had a bit of a difficult day. That bald guy who used to come to your school to bother you was at the diner today and it made me annoyed.”

“You should just use one of your guys to shoot him,” Kaylee said with wide eyes, and she made a gun with her fingers and pointed it, “bang.”

“As fun as that would be,” Gulliver snorted at her words, “we can’t simply murder people who piss us off.”

“Grandfather said we could.”

“Grandfather shouldn’t say such things,” January’s head popped up over the back of the sofa and shooting Gulliver an annoyed look.

“He’s old. Take what he says with a grain of salt, Kaylee.” Gulliver sighed loudly and looked at his phone as it buzzed in his hand, “speaking of old people, my parents are itching to come to our room to meet you Kaylee and your mom too.”

January disappeared again behind the sofa and sighed loudly, “I feel like today has already been a lot. Can we have wine with dinner?”

He chuckled at her question, “yes”

“Can dinner be pizza?” Kaylee asked.

“No!” January whined, “no more pizza. I want pasta, like thick wide noodles and tons of sauce and garlic bread and salad.”

“Oh, yes, salad with croutons!” Kaylee nodded excitedly, “Daddy can we order room service and even have dessert?”

“Yup. Grab the room service menu and take it to your mom and pick out all the things you want. Order enough for ten people, January, please.”

“Ten?” she asked curiously.

“Glenn, Ford, Mitsos, Grandfather, Thisbe, me, you and Kaylee
