A Surprise Part I
January looked up and shook her head at the man entering her studio at the back of the store.
“Am I interrupting?”
“Yes.”
“I come bearing gifts.” Gulliver held up a bag and then a cup, “and coffee.”
“What is that?” she eyed it curiously. “In the bag?”
“I couldn’t sleep after I left you and Kaylee last evening, so I ended up doing what all people with cell phones do.”
“What?”
“Online shopping,” he grinned at her as he took the seat Lottie usually took across from her workspace. “I had my grandfather pick this up for me before he flew out.”
“Your grandfather?”
“He’s at the hotel in Burlington with Thisbe.”
She was curious how Thisbe was given the woman hadn’t leached out even once since their spat the other evening. It fai24

to January, like the shoe was still waiting to drop. “Why is he in Burlington?”
“He is here to support me and Thisbe and hopefully to meet Kaylee once you are more open to it. He’s also enjoying fucking with Davis who he put an entire team on the same floor of him at the hotel Davis is in. My grandfather made a point this morning to wave at Davis to make sure the man knows we know what he
did.”
“Good grief,” her eyes were trained on the bag being set on her workstation instead of on the man who was, instead of his usual suit and tie, was wearing a pair of faded, well–worn jeans which hugged his thighs tight and a black t–shirt which boldly showed the carved pecs of the man’s chest. She didn’t want to look at his perfect physique, especially when she was feeling so out of sorts. Curiosity got the better of her, and she pulled the bag and the coffee towards her, and she was torn between taking a long drink of the brew and the bag. She went with the drink,
“Thirsty?”
“Mom pissed me off, so I didn’t get coffee at home.”
“Why?”
“She’s team Gulliver and made me feel like I was taking advantage of her kindness by leaving her to play hostess yesterday while I went on a date.”

He was quiet as he processed her angry comment while she chugged the drink.
“It’s not fair. You suddenly show back up, and everyone seems to forget how it was my heart which got ripped out of my chest while it was still beating and I’m supposed to simply forgive you for breaking me into a million pieces. It wasn’t the fact you were dangerous. You broke my heart; Gulliver and she thinks I’m supposed to just forgive you because you have a good excuse?”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered across the room.
“You keep saying it so it must be true.”
“You should drink more of that,” he waved at the cup with a hint of a smile, “it has all the sugar you like in it to sweeten your disposition.”
“You can’t bribe me with coffee, Gulliver.”
He motioned to the bag, “what about with diamonds, opals, sapphires and topaz?”
Her eyes lit up, “what?” she grabbed the bag and opened it and barely contained her squeal. “Gulliver!”
“I remembered there was a wholesaler you liked to visit when you lived with us. You once spent hours going over every single

stone to find the right one. I ordered some of the ones you probably wouldn’t purchase as a single mom with overhead,” he waved to the store. “You can do what you do to make them beautiful.”
She pulled a velvet pouch from the paper bag and dumped it into the palm of her hand.
“They’re already beautiful,” she gasped as she held up a diamond to the light. “You brought me diamonds?”
“Synthetic ones. I specifically remember you saying you prefer the man–made ones for your creation.”
“Gulliver, there needs to be fifty–sixty–grand worth of gemstones in a bag here.” Her eyes turned to his startled. “I can’t accept this.”
