Gulliver spoke very softly, “Lottie, does he know I’m here?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Don’t tell him. Let him know January will be right out.”

Lottie nodded and disappeared back out to the front.

“You can’t shoot him,” Gulliver waved his hand in front of her eyes which were trained on the gun.

“Why not? You could hide his body somewhere, right? I feel like he is at least fifty percent to blame for the fear I’ve been living in the last eight years.”

“Only fifty?”

“My Dad holds at least ten and you have the other forty. I don’t think you realize how cold and cruel you sounded the day I heard you and Thisbe.”

“I wanted to strangle her, so I imagine I sounded murderous. We can discuss that later. For now, I want you to go out there and listen to whatever it is he says. Remember that we removed his equipment, but we’ve put our family security in already. As I said earlier, we can get it beefed up with equipment. but what is here now is decent enough.”

“What if I snap and start beating on him? I’m pretty good at self–defense?”

“I’ll ask you not to kill him or even seriously maim him. If you do wish to go that route, we’ll find a much more discreet way of doing it.”

She frowned at him, “you’d let me kill him?”

“Sweetheart I’d personally craft whatever weapon you want to kill him, but I am convinced you are not quite capable of murder. Perhaps I’ll let you beat him up in a location of our choosing and I will finish the job once you’re off site.”

“It just makes me angry because if it wasn’t for him, I might have gone back and told you about Kaylee. Not for me but for her. She can’t stop talking about you and I realize it’s because you’re a novelty and her dad shouldn’t be a novelty.” She stood up straight, “I don’t regret protecting her, but I feel sorry she has lost out so much.”

He cupped her cheeks and pressed a kiss to her forehead, “go out there and keep your head on. I will be listening from here and will reveal myself if and when it’s necessary. I’d prefer to keep him thinking I’m not here though for as long as I can. I want to know what he’s up to and he’ll tell you more if he thinks I’m not around.”

“Okay.” She sighed and held her hands out, “I’m a bit shaky.”

“Are you afraid of him?”

“No. I want to punch him in the balls like I did to you and that other guy at the restaurant.”

“Keep it together there Rocky,” he laughed quietly and pushed her towards the door.

January walked through to the store front and looked at the man who was near the front entrance and grimaced. He was looking out the windows as if searching for something.

“What are you doing here Davis?” she called out, moving to stand behind a counter near Lottie.

“We need to talk, January.” He shot Lottie a look, “privately.”

“She stays.”

“I stay.”

January and Lottie spoke over one another and then shared a smile.

“Gulliver Raptis has been in contact with you. We need to discuss this.”

She frowned at the question and the glower on his face. “You’re more concerned about me being on a date than Gulliver babysitting?”

He shifted in his steps, “you were told before that if you were dating we should run them through the data base to make sure they weren’t a risk or one of Gulliver’s men.”

“Pretty sure the guy is not one of Gulliver’s men. He’s a friend and has been in this town longer than I have.”

“Who was it?”

“Why is it your business?” Lottie questioned. “I think the federal agent is jealous.”
