Julian closed his eyes briefly, the pounding in his temples intensifying. “I’ll have someone bring you back. Once you’re here, you stay put where I arrange. No trouble. Can you do that?”

Maddox didn’t hesitate. “Yes, absolutely. Just get me out of here. I’ll do whatever you say.”

Julian didn’t bother responding further. “Someone will contact you.”

He ended the call.

Back at the office, for the first time in a long while, his focus slipped during work.

Quinn’s divorce couldn’t drag on any longer.

Bringing Maddox back meant having him available if needed. If not, sending him away again would be easy enough.

Then Lucy’s call came in.

Julian didn’t actually know what he would say if he saw Quinn. He just knew he wanted to.

He used to think men who chased women relentlessly were ridiculous.

If someone didn’t want you, why keep pushing? Now he understood.

Quinn had made herself perfectly clear, and still, he couldn’t walk away. Even now, he was going to see her.

Even if they said nothing.

Just seeing her would be enough.

Because of what Lucy said last night, that Quinn had been crying, the thought wouldn’t leave him.

All night, every time he closed his eyes, he saw her, those bright eyes filled with tears, lashes damp, the corners flushed red.

Only now did he realize how deeply love could dismantle a person.

It didn’t just humble you.

It stripped away your pride in ways you never imagined.

Everything he once held onto, his composure, his distance, his control, felt like it had slipped through his fingers.

So this is what it means to lose to someone completely

After finishing his call with Veronica, he arrived downstairs. Not long after, Lucy came out and drove away.

He had arranged for that. Only then did he step out of the car and head upstairs.

When Quinn heard the knock, she paused, slightly surprised.

Lucy had just left. Did she forget something?

Then why knock instead of just coming in?

Not thinking much of it, Quinn walked over and opened the door. “Coming.”

She pulled it open. “Lucy-”

Her voice stopped abruptly. Standing outside wasn’t Lucy. It was Julian.

The surprise on her face was immediate, impossible to hide.

She hadn’t expected to see him again, not after everything she said yesterday.

Then she quickly reminded herself, this was Lucy’s place. If he came here, it had nothing to do with her.

“She’s not here,” Quinn said, steadying herself.

Her hand rested on the door as her gaze dropped, landing briefly on his sharply tailored pants, flawless, unwrinkled, like a life untouched by chaos.

A faint, almost self-mocking smile tugged at her lips. “You should call her.”

She started to close the door. Julian didn’t move. His eyes stayed on her, taking in every detail.

The redness around her eyes hadn’t faded.

There was still a slight puffiness.

Did she cry again? Was it because of me?

The questions crowded his mind, but none of them made it past his lips.

“I came to get the cufflinks,” he said finally.

It was a simple excuse. Too simple. But it got him here.

“Oh.” Quinn turned away. “I’ll get them.”

She left the door open, assuming he would stay outside. After everything that had happened, why would he want to come in?

But when she came back with the cufflinks wrapped in silk and turned around, he was already inside.

She froze for a brief second, tension flickering across her face.

Walking forward, she placed them on the table. “They’re here.”

Then she stepped back, putting a bit of distance between them. When she looked up again, his gaze was calm, but distant.

“Is there anything else?” she asked.

It was polite, but clear. A dismissal.

Julian looked at her, all the questions still there, but softened by something else entirely.

“Your eyes… are they okay?” he asked quietly.

His gaze lowered slightly, hiding everything he couldn’t say.

Quinn instinctively touched the corner of her eye.

“They look a little red,” he added.

“I’m fine.” She turned her face away. “If there’s nothing else…”

“The thing you promised me before,” he said, his voice steady but low, “do you remember?”

Her heart tightened instantly. Of course she remembered.

She had said she wouldn’t avoid him.

And she didn’t keep that promise.
