Chapter 211 Too Close for Comfort

Julian showed up a little after six, which meant even if they called it a night around ten, there were still a few solid hours where it would just be the two of them sharing the same space.
There was no way Quinn could stay in bed the entire time, but the idea of sitting around in silence felt awkward, and trying to make conversation felt even worse because she had no clue what she could possibly say that wouldn’t make things more uncomfortable.
Julian, on the other hand, moved through everything like it was the most natural thing in the world. After clearing the table and washing his hands, he came back over, glanced at her, and spoke in an easy tone, “You want to stretch your legs a little?”
Quinn hesitated, then asked, “You mean go outside?”
Julian shook his head slightly. “It’s chilly out, and I don’t want you catching anything. We can just walk the hallway. If you really feel like getting out, we can head down to the garage, hop in the car, and I’ll take you for a drive.”
“That’s okay,” Quinn said quickly, already picturing how much effort that would take. She would have to change, deal with the hassle, and it just wasn’t worth it.
And walking the hallway meant running into people, which somehow felt even worse, especially if she was seen with him.
“Then just move around in here,” Julian said, already stepping closer. “I’ll stay with you.”
Quinn immediately felt her chest tighten. “You don’t have to, really. I can manage on my own.”
Julian looked at her, calm but firm. “You almost fell last night, remember?”
“That was just bad luck…”
“And if your luck is just as bad today?” he said, not moving an inch. “I’m not busy. I came here to take care of you.”
“You really don’t need to go this far for me…”
“I told you already,” Julian said, his tone steady, “I don’t do things without getting something back.”
Quinn lifted her eyes to meet his, and for a moment, her expression softened, but there was something guarded underneath. “Julian, I’m sorry. Whatever it is you want… I don’t think I can give it to you.”
She had spent the entire day going back and forth in her head, trying to make sense of everything she was feeling, and in the end, she forced herself to push it all down.
They were too different.
Not just in status or background, but in the kind of lives they lived and the way they saw the world.
And more than anything, she was afraid of what would happen if she let herself fall.

She had already given her heart once, to Chase, and what she got in return was pain she still hadn’t fully recovered from.
Even now, she knew what she had felt back then might not have been real love, but that didn’t change how badly it had hurt.
If it were Julian…
She was already losing control, already drawn to him more than she wanted to admit.

He was so close now that his presence filled every inch of space around her, and that clean, subtle scent of his wrapped around her senses, leaving her nowhere to escape.
She didn’t dare move, didn’t dare breathe too deeply, instinctively shrinking back like that might somehow make her less noticeable.
But Julian clearly wasn’t letting her off that easily.
“I don’t do losing deals,” he said evenly. “That’s not how I got where I am.”
Quinn felt completely trapped.
Her eyes were shut tight, her lashes trembling slightly. “Then… you tell me. What do you want?”
Even without seeing her eyes, Julian could tell she was scared.
She had been bold enough to push him away, to say she didn’t like him, but now she looked like she might fall apart if he took one more step.
He had been upset, even angry, after hearing what she said earlier, and a part of him had wanted to push her, to make her face it.
But now…
He couldn’t bring himself to do it.
