Lucy turned toward her immediately. “But what if it doesn’t happen? What if Julian ends up choosing someone he actually wants to be with?”

Even as she said it, the uncertainty in her voice was obvious, because she knew how unlikely that scenario

was.

Quinn understood that too, which was why her response came out steady and grounded. “Lucy, none of this has anything to do with me.”

She paused, then continued, her tone becoming more firm, more deliberate. “I’m being honest with you. I don’t want anything to do with Julian anymore. You don’t have to speak for him or help him. I don’t want to see him again.”

Lucy sat up straighter, clearly caught off guard. “Quinn, that’s not right. He’s different with you. I can tell. He likes you.”

Quinn didn’t hesitate. “Even if he does, I don’t feel the same.”

Lucy blinked, confused. “Then what do you like?”

Quinn thought for a moment, her expression calm as she answered. “Someone gentle, someone steady, someone who makes you feel safe just by being around.”

Lucy stared at her, disbelief written all over her face. “Since when? You’ve never said that before. And just so we’re clear, Julian is not that person.”

Quinn gave a small smile. “Maybe I only figured it out recently. It doesn’t matter anyway. I’m not planning on dating anyone.”

Lucy hesitated, then asked more carefully this time, “You’re not still stuck on Chase, are you?”

Quinn shook her head without hesitation. “No. I don’t feel anything for him anymore. No anger, no attachment, nothing.”

Lucy exhaled, relieved. “Good. But don’t shut yourself off completely. If you meet someone who actually makes your heart react, you should at least give it a chance.”

Quinn closed her eyes, her voice quiet. “Yeah. I know.”

After a brief pause, she added, “It’s late. Let’s get some sleep.”

Lucy reached over and turned off the light, and the room fell into darkness.
