Chris shook her head and opened her mouth to say more. But all her words got stuck in her throat when she looked into Eloise's eyes, so still and deep.
Whatever.
Eloise had always been the type to know her own mind. Chris swallowed her anger and turned to leave.
Eloise pressed her bloodless lips together and looked at Victor with a flat, emotionless stare. "Which one do you think is better?"
Victor's tense nerves relaxed all at once. This was exactly how Eloise was. So gentle and easy, it put his mind at ease.
He didn't know how much she'd heard just now, but she was still being so "understanding" about everything. She wasn't making a scene in public, and she was even asking for his opinion about what to do with their baby.
In her world, he was everything.
Victor felt both touched and guilty, and his voice softened without him meaning it to. "You've always been scared of pain, so let's go with the surgical option. How about we schedule it for tomorrow? I'll clear my whole schedule tomorrow and be there with you the whole time."
The corner of Eloise's mouth twitched slightly, somewhere between a smile and something else.
Her eyes deliberately skipped past Anita and Beatrice standing behind him, and finally settled on his face. "But I want to do it today. Will you come with me?"
Before Victor could answer, Beatrice's weak voice called out from behind him. "Daddy, it hurts so much..."
Anita immediately bit her lower lip, and her voice took on a deliberately urgent tone. "Mr. Clarkson, Beatrice has to get her IV in a minute. She's been terrified of needles since she was little. Every time she gets one, she cries so hard she nearly passes out. You see..."
Victor's gaze shifted between them and Eloise, clearly torn. "Eloise, the surgery can wait one more day. Why don't you go home and rest today, and tomorrow, I'll definitely..."
Eloise couldn't help but laugh.
She knew him too well. She'd already predicted this exact answer.
In Victor's world, she'd always been last on his list of priorities. He'd never once put her first.
Back then, it hadn't hurt because she'd been stupid enough to believe he was like her father. She'd thought he was the kind of man who'd grow old with her, who'd even face death by her side. So she'd given him everything without a single regret.
But now, that fantasy had completely shattered. She could finally see the truth—the man she'd loved had only ever existed in her imagination.
Men as devoted and faithful as her father were rare in this world. Victor was just another ordinary, greedy, selfish man among countless others.
A despair so cold it felt like it might freeze her spine spread through her from deep within her heart.
After a long silence, Eloise nodded with complete obedience. Her voice came out soft, almost like a sigh. "Okay."
She didn't argue anymore. It was like she didn't even have the energy left to care.
