“It’s good that you’ve cleared that up. I’m not saying your family is meddling. I know they’re just concerned about Everly, but they’re limited by the circles they’re in.

“The young men they come across seem outstanding to them, but compared with our family and with Everly, they’re far from good enough. That girl has incredibly high standards. Unless a man is truly exceptional, he won’t be able to win her over.

“She keeps saying she doesn’t want to get married, and that she’ll just have two children through IVF. That’s only because she hasn’t met a man exceptional enough to change her mind. Once she meets someone like that and spends enough time with him, she’ll gradually change her mind.

“Actually, my first choice was Heath York, but he’s a couple of years younger than Everly and currently has no intention of getting married. Most of the men in the York family don’t marry until they’re around thirty years old.

“Besides, the heir of the Yorks would never agree to marry into his wife’s family. The Yorks don’t have much business in Clearfield either, so it would be difficult to convince Heath to move here.

Maddie asked softly, “Did Sonny’s parents divorce because of the affair?”

“His mother was the one who wanted the divorce. I looked into what his father did. He was terrible. The divorce was quite ugly, but his father did consistently pay for child support.
