It took Devon two decades of giving Chloe his all to earn the Johnson elders’ approval.

He was not the only childhood friend Chloe had growing up. There was Laurence, Sonny, et cetera, but Devon was from Annenburg, which gave him the proximity advantage.

“You don’t know how many admirers of yours they’ve secretly scared off ever since you started high school.

“Your brothers and I have chased off quite a few, too. Whoever shows a hint of a crush on you will immediately have their entire ancestry dug out.”

Chloe was speechless because she had not known that.

“What did you bring for me?” Chloe asked curiously, spotting the exquisite bag.

It probably was not jewelry.
