His body froze as if he’d been struck.
Xiao Ya had no spiritual power, so she didn’t smell the fragrance wafting through the air.
She had no idea what was wrong with him.
Seeing him like this, she panicked.
"A Xi, what’s wrong? What happened?"
’Could something bad have happened?’
Bai Chaosi’s throat tightened. He couldn’t believe his own suspicion.
His voice rumbled from deep in his chest as he shot a sharp, warning look at Xiao Ya.
"Go back inside!"
"Don’t come out, no matter what you hear."
Xiao Ya was taken aback by his demeanor and stammered,
"Oh, okay, okay..."
But before she could even turn, Bai Chaosi vanished in a flash.
Her footsteps froze. She stared in the direction Bai Chaosi had disappeared...
The expression on her delicate, helpless face slowly turned to ice.
All traces of her recent fear and timidity were gone.
Just then, a cat-like shadow darted past, landing at the base of the courtyard wall.
Xiao Ya’s expression soured as she looked over. When a grayish-blue Pallas’s cat emerged, she said irritably,
"It’s so late. What are you doing here?"
Her voice was laced with impatience and irritation.
The Pallas’s cat padded closer, speaking as if they were old acquaintances.
"He’s long gone, yet you’re still staring. Haven’t you given up hope?"
"I told you long ago, the men of the Fox Clan aren’t so easy to win over, especially not one from the Nine-tailed White Fox Clan. You should take a good look at yourself. Marrying up isn’t that simple."
Xiao Ya’s expression chilled, her eyes flashing with defiance and resentment.
She glared at the approaching Pallas’s cat, seemingly ready to vent all her frustration on it.
"None of your business! I have all the time and patience in the world to win his heart. It’s only a matter of time before he falls for me. Then, you’ll see me become the revered Female Master of a Nine-tailed Fox!"
The Pallas’s cat on the ground listened, shook its fur, and scoffed,
"I’d stop dreaming if I were you. That’s Young Master Chaoxi, renowned throughout the world for his stunning talent. How could his heart be swayed by a mountain-raised wild girl like you?"
"If I were you, I’d focus on figuring out how to clean up today’s mess."
"The Flood Dragon Clan isn’t so easy to fool. I’m afraid they already suspect us. If they really uncover our secret, your dream of becoming the Young Master’s Wife will go up in smoke."
Hearing this, Xiao Ya snapped,
"What’s that got to do with me? If the Flood Dragon Clan traces this back to you, you’ll have brought it on yourself! I never told you to murder your own flesh and blood over this. I just asked you to get rid of that woman who’s in my way!"
"And another thing—so what if I’m a wild girl? Who was it that forced me to grow up in the mountains? Who made me this way? How dare you bring that up?"
Hearing this, the Pallas’s cat on the ground flinched as if she had struck a nerve.
All the fight went out of it, and it fell silent for a long moment.
The air grew still.
Then, having seemingly composed itself, it spoke slowly,
"I admit, I didn’t expect to fail. It was my mistake. I failed to do what I promised you."
"But that woman is just too uncanny. Didn’t you see her moves? Or are females from the Flood Dragon Clan inherently different from others? Do they possess abilities unknown to the rest of us??"
Xiao Ya listened, her almond-shaped eyes blazing with jealous rage.
"She is different from ordinary people, I’ll grant you that. But so what? No matter how skilled she is, it’s just a few cheap tricks. You probed her yourself, didn’t you? She has no spiritual power. A female with no spiritual power... if one attempt isn’t enough to kill her, then we’ll try a second time!"
"I refuse to believe that Beast Husband of hers can be there to protect her every single time. In any case, no one is going to take the spot beside Bai Chaosi from me."
