Eliza was about to ask, Do you know me?
But the woman’s phone rang again. She answered in a rush, “I’m coming right now“, and left so quickly she only had time to gesture a quick thanks.
Eliza straightened up and left the restroom.
Before she reached the main hall, she ran into Xander in the corridor.
If fate had its way, the last person Xander wanted to bump into was Eliza; the one he wanted to see was Medea.
But luck rarely obliged.
His expression was frosty.
Eliza didn’t even glance at him, treating him as air as she walked toward the hall.
As they passed shoulder to shoulder, he suddenly spoke, voice dripping with scorn. “Copycat.”
liza hadn’t intended to bother with him, but since he’d brought it to her doorstep, she saw no reason to endure it.
What are you barking at?” She turned, eyes locking onto his, sharp, edged.
le didn’t expect the bite back, then doubled down, even colder:
Am I wrong? You’ve been imitating your ‘senior‘ in everything–projects, even your clothes. But you can only mimic the surface. Her education and chievements are things you’ll never copy in this lifetime.”
So you’re Medea’s lapdog?”
Tow it made sense. No wonder he came at her with his hackles up.
ruth be told, they’d barely interacted; when they’d tried to discuss cooperation before, he’d stood her up more than once.
he’d never understood the hostility until now.
I’m not as filthy as you think,” he snapped, bristling at the word lapdog and hating her more for it.
Filthy? I didn’t say a thing.” Eliza chuckled, amused by how readily he incriminated himself.
he sound made him bristle; his face soured.
ut 1liza wasn’t done. She let her gaze slide over him, up and down, then smiled wider,
That outfit… why does it look so much like Calvin’s? Who’s the copycat now, President Watts?”
The jab hit home, his face darkened a shade.
He hadn’t expected her to be this sharp–three lines and she’d flipped the board, leaving him looking ridiculous.
With nothing coming out of his mouth, Fliza lost interest.
With that level of bite, he dared to come out and nip at people?
Frankly, he wasn’t even on par with that useless Gideon.
still green, the kid.
He was, after all, a ‘bloom of the motherland’s future.” No need to crush him too hard.

Chapter 170
he withdrew her gaze and turned toward the hall–only to lock eyes, by accident, with Calvin at a distance.
lis expression was ice–cold, yet in his eyes… was that a hint of amusement?
fust’ve been her imagination.
efore she could look closer, he looked away and disappeared at the end of the corridor.
liza decided the corridor was cursed. Dogs everywhere.
ack in the ballroom, she noticed Vega on stage giving a speech.
tanding beside him was the very woman she’d met in the restroom.
he paused to listen and realized–that was Mrs. Vega.
oised, elegant–well matched with Vega.
s hosts and the first family of G City, the couple were everyone’s focus.
Irs. Vega finally slipped free of the crowd and was about to go find Eliza when someone blocked her path–Xander.
Good evening, Mrs. Vega. I’m Xander of Watts Group. A pleasure.”
s a guest, she handled it gracefully–shook hands, exchanged a few polite words.
e pushed on. “Mrs. Vega, would you have a moment to discuss the BroadTech acquisition?”
> that was it–he was here for the BroadTech deal.
be considered, then smiled apologetically. “I’m not discussing business tonight.”
e couldn’t press. “Then I’ll call on you another day.”
he gave a small nod and moved on–straight toward Eliza.
fatching that, the smile slowly faded from Xander’s face.
Miss Grant, thank you for earlier,” Mrs. Vega said, taking Eliza’s hand, her fondness unguarded.
I was nothing, Please don’t give it another thought,” Eliza replied, giving her hand a light squeeze. Her brows knit. “Your hand is freezing.”
frs. Vega hesitated. “It’s my period. I run cold.”
liza used to have the same issue; it had improved with treatment.
learing this, she offered, “I used to be like that. A TCM prescription helped. If you’d like, I can share the formula.”
It’s an old problem. I’m used to it. I’ve tried medicine; it didn’t help. But thank you,” Mrs. Vega said, clearly pleased with Eliza
My husband mentioned you before–said you were exceptional. I was curious what kind of gul earns his appreciation. Now that I’ve met you. I see what he neant, so quick and deft.”
She liked Eliza and chatted with her for quite a while.
Many people came over to greet her and offer toasts.
Knowing alcohol wasn’t ideal during her period, Eliza stepped in and drunk for her.
Mrs. Vega refused at first, but Eliza assured her, “I hold my liquor. I used to do this a lot. Don’t worry.”
Mrs. Vega’s look grew warmer still.
Chapter 170
After several rounds, Eliza had drunk a fair bit.
She wasn’t drunk, but a rosy flush had climbed her cheeks.
Feeling sorry for her, Mrs. Vega had someone escort Eliza to a lounge to rest.
Eliza rested a moment, used the restroom, touched up her makeup.
Just as she was about to head back, someone knocked.
She thought it was Mrs. Vega, or someone sent by her, so she opened the door.
Instead, it was Calvin.
He’d been drinking–more than a little, judging from the strong smell as the door swung open.
Eliza frowned instinctively, voice cool. “Wrong room.”
He acted as if he hadn’t heard and walked straight in, swaying unsteadily.
He found the sofa and dropped onto it, going still.
Because of his alcohol allergy, Calvin rarely drank.
On the rare occasions he did, Eliza would personally give him his antihistamines; he’d sleep afterward and never made a fuss.
She’d heard that lately, to shield Medea at social events, he’d done desensitization and could drink now.
But the habit of sleeping after drinking hadn’t changed.
Still, what gave him the right to sleep in her lounge?
Eliza went over, brows tight, and gave his face a few brisk pats.
Quite firm–sharp, slapping sounds.
‘Hey. Wake up. Don’t sleep here, Go find your dog owner.”
Walking a dog without a leash–no manners at all.
He must have felt the sting; his brows drew together and he caught her wrist.
His palm was burning hot.
She tried to pull back on instinct-
But he tugged first, hard, dragging her straight into his arms.
His embrace was hotter than his hand, heat flooding her senses in an instant.
She faltered for a heartbeat.
In that sliver of time, he cupped the back of her head and drew her down.
His thin lips found hers with unerring precision, his low voice rough with a heat that shook her to the core, murmuring-
“I missed you so much…”
