Chapter 174
Eliza didn’t answer the first call.
But Baxter seemed to have something urgent and rang her again.
She picked up. “What is it?”
Baxter hesitated for a long time before finally blurting out, “Those fireworks… Calv set them off to cheer Medea up.”
Eliza: “…”
What a buzzkill.
She muttered a perfunctory thanks and hung up, opened her social media to delete the post, only to notice someone had already liked it.
The name was COLD.
As long as it wasn’t someone from Calvin’s circle, it was fine. Eliza deleted the post anyway.
Then Baxter texted again, asking what time she would fly back to Washington the next day.
Assuming it was about work, Eliza told him her flight time.
But the next morning, Baxter actually showed up at the airport to pick her up.
‘Is there something urgent?” Eliza asked.
‘No.”
He couldn’t make up a story, so he simply admitted, “Just here to pick you up.”
Eliza didn’t know how to respond.
Still, he meant well, and with their families working together, she couldn’t outright refuse.
Out of courtesy, she went along and got into his car,
As his car pulled away, Medea happened to notice.
Her movement faltered as she got into her own car, her face darkening.
“What’s wrong?” Calvin asked.
“Nothing.” She quickly masked her expression and slipped into the seat.
But once Calvin started driving, she messaged Regina, asking if she’d seen Mrs. Wade recently and mentioned Eliza
Regina replied, “Mrs. Wade just got back yesterday from a trip abroad. I’m meeting her for afternoon tea today.”
Medea reminded her, “Then do it quickly.”
She worried the longer it dragged on, the more chance Baxter would fall for Eliza’s tricks.
Since it was the weekend, Eliza planned to spend time with Ottille, so she asked Baxter to drop her at her apartment building.
Ottilie happened to be taking out the trash. When she saw Iliza return, her face lit up.
Baxter even helped carry the luggage, politely greeting her as “Auntie ”

Ottilie couldn’t help giving him a few more glances.
After he left, she asked, “Who’s that young man? He looks nice, and very polite.”
Eliza immediately guessed her mother’s thoughts and cut them off: “Him? He’s Calvin’s buddy.”
Ottilie’s expression changed instantly. “Then absolutely not! If they hang out together, they’re all the same kind of scum. Absolutely not.”
Eliza nodded. “I think so too.”
¡he hadn’t even had a sip of water when Ottilie brought up a blind date. “There’s a young man, decent enough. He’s a civil servant, stable job in the system.”
Mom!” Eliza groaned.
Complaining won’t help. I already set it up. Here’s the address. Go meet him.”
liza: “…”
f she’d known, she wouldn’t have come home.
ragged into it, she went to the blind date.
he man was arrogant, showing off right from the start. “I’m a civil servant, at the Planning and Resources Bureau.”
Oh,” Eliza replied, “the Planning Bureau.”
You know it?” He raised a brow.
I do.” She smiled lightly.
Why?” He clearly thought a pretty woman like her wouldn’t know much.
liza sipped her tea, then said casually, “Because we also handle some government projects.”
he man’s face froze for a second, though his pride didn’t fade.
I expect after we marry, you’ll quit your job and be a full–time housewife.”
liza didn’t get angry, just listened patiently. “Anything else?”
My family wants me to marry this year, have a kid next year, then another after a year’s break–ideally one boy and one girl. Oh, and after marriage we’ll live rith my parents. I’m their only child, and they’d be lonely otherwise. My mom has stomach problems, so meals must be carefully prepared, three times a day. fy dad’s sleep is poor, he doesn’t wake until ten, so you’ll need to prepare a fourth meal for him. And if I work late, you’ll need to make me supper.”
liza nodded as he spoke.
hinking she agreed, he grew even more smug, “What about you? Any requirements? Just so you know, the bride price must be reasonable, and it has to come ack to my family.”
liza replied slowly, “I don’t ask for much, but I do have one question.”
Go ahead,” he said, arrogant as ever.
Are your parents tough? I hit pretty hard, and most people can’t handle it.”
་་
The man: “…”
Finding it pointless, Eliza signaled the waiter to bring the bill.
But just then, the man suddenly stood up respectfully. “Director Blaine, you’re dining here too?”
Hector gave him a faint nod, then his gaze softened at Eliza. “President Grant, long time no see.”
Long time no see,” Eliza replied, surprised to run into him.
