“What happened?” Eliza asked casually.

“It’s that Director Wynn,” Sadie whispered from what sounded like a bathroom stall. Her voice was pitched low, like she was afraid of being overheard. “She vetoed every single project you’d locked in before–every one! Not a single one left standing!”

Eliza froze. “All of them?”

“Yes, all of them! Even the AI project and the gaming project you valued the most.” Sadie sounded utterly exasperated.

Eliza frowned. “What did President Young say?”

“Nothing. He didn’t say a word.”

For a moment, Eliza’s mind went blank. But soon enough, clarity settled in.

Of course, Calvin knew which projects were worth the investment.

The reason he said nothing was simple because it was Medea who shot them down.

He was letting her establish dominance, making the entire company bow to her.

Once again, shielding her, backing her.

“Do you think President Young’s been hexed or something? Why is everything up to Director Wynn now?” Sadie grumbled, having nowhere else

to vent.

“It’s simple, he’s solidifying her position,” Eliza said flatly. She’d seen enough.

Even if Calvin announced tomorrow that the entire company belonged to Medea, she wouldn’t be surprised.

“But why so blatant? What’s he trying to do, treat her like the future lady of Everest?”

The words slipped out too fast. Sadie caught herself a second too late.

“Eliza, I didn’t mean it like that…”

Eliza remained calm, calm enough to joke. “Maybe you’re right. So best not to mutter behind people’s backs. If word got out, you’d be out of a job.”

Sadie didn’t care about her own risk. She only felt bad for Eliza.

“President Young will regret this one day. I swear, he will!”

Whether or not Calvin would regret it, Eliza no longer cared.

Regret or no regret she had chosen to let it go.

“All that’s really a shame are those projects,” she said, voice steady.

Sadie agreed. “Exactly! You spent so much time doing the due diligence, screening them one by one. Now who knows which firm will snatch them up.”

She hadn’t meant anything deeper. But Eliza heard something else.

If she started her own firm… could she take those projects on herself?

The thought flashed quickly, but reality pressed hard.

Her current connections and resources, all tied to Calvin and Everest.

Once she left, once they split, which investor would still give her face?

Josh arrived right on time. He’d clearly spoken to Director in advance; the man was already waiting in his office.

The director greeted him warmly, all polite smiles and handshakes. “Young Master Kallis, please, come in.”

Eliza didn’t know Josh’s true standing. But from Director’s deference, it was obvious his status was significant.

Josh wasted no time. He stated their request directly.

Director hesitated. “The slots were set yesterday. Changing them now would be… inappropriate.”

“She’s my friend,” Josh said.

That alone put The director in a bind.

Eliza stepped forward herself, earnest, laying her carefully prepared documents on the desk. She asked him sincerely for help.

Being who Josh was, The director couldn’t bluntly refuse. He excused himself, saying he had something to handle, and slipped out.

He didn’t return for a long time.

Instead, Eliza’s phone buzzed. A message from Philip: During the experts‘ seminar, he’d shown them her materials.

“They’re actually more interested in your mother’s case,” he wrote. “It’s more challenging.”

Relief sparked briefly in her chest.

But when The director returned, his stance was firm.

“Young Master Josh, I’m sorry. The slot’s already assigned. It can’t be changed.”

Seeing Josh’s face harden, he hurried to soften it. “But rest assured, we’ll still give Ms. Grant’s mother our full effort. And if she isn’t comfortable

here, I can connect her to even more authoritative hospitals.”

Eliza’s last flicker of hope dimmed.

“Eliza, wait outside,” Josh told her.

She stumbled out, numb.

Inside, Josh cut straight through. “Tell me honestly, what condition must be met for her to get the surgery? Name it.”

The director stiffened. “Young Master Josh, you misunderstand. This is something I truly can’t do.”

Josh’s eyes darkened. “Then who’s stopping you?”

“This…” The director faltered.

In Washington, only a handful of families outranked the Kallis family. Josh didn’t need more than a second to piece it together.

“Calvin?”

The director neither confirmed nor denied. But silence was its own answer.

“I see,” Josh said. He stood and left without another word.

Eliza also sensed the situation wasn’t looking good and could only prepare for both outcomes, checking online for expert teams in this field.

Josh directly went to Everest to find Calvin.

When he arrived, Medea was also there.

“Josh, what brings you here?” Medea seemed quite pleased to see Josh.

“I’m here to see Calv.”

“He’s in his office, I’ll take you there.” Medea took the initiative to lead the way.

Calvin had already guessed Josh would come because an hour earlier, Director had called him.

Director mentioned that Josh wanted an appointment for the expert team’s consultation.

But Calvin had already promised to help Medea, so he wasn’t about to easily give up the spot.

Hence, his response was clear.

After some consideration, Director had no choice but to politely refuse Josh.

“Could you let me have the expert team’s consultation spot?” Josh got straight to the point with Calvin.
