Remington wasn't actually angry. It wasn't a secret that Lizetta's family had issues with him.
He hadn't handled things well in the past, so it was only natural for her elders to voice their disapproval.
He was just a little hurt by how easily she had pushed him away. It made him feel like he had never truly made amends.
She seemed ready to leave him at a moment's notice. He was terrified that her family's insistence would force them apart.
He feared she would obey her family's arrangements without hesitation, perhaps even agreeing to marry whomever they chose for her.
The mere thought sent a chill through him. He desperately needed her to do something to prove she cared.
Looking at the woman standing before him, her delicate face tense as she earnestly tried to comfort him, his anxiety and dread slowly dissipated.
He wrapped his arms around her slender waist, dipped his head, and kissed her. After a few lingering pecks, he rested his forehead against hers and spoke against her lips.
"I don't have any confidence, babe. You need to give me some."
"How?"
Lizetta breathed heavily, her eyes already hazy from his burning gaze.
Remington pecked her lips again. "Say you love me."
She unconsciously curved her lips into a smile and obediently whispered, "I love you."
Her soft voice was swallowed by his kiss. He scooped her up, took a couple of steps back, and sat on the sofa. As she straddled his lap, the kiss deepened, leaving her mind pleasantly clouded.
Wait, she thought hazily. Remington lacking confidence to win Grandpa Nelson's approval had absolutely nothing to do with her saying she loved him.
Meanwhile, in the damp, dark basement of an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city.
A grimy pool sat against a peeling wall, filled to the brim. In the center of the water, a woman was tied to a metal frame.
She stood in the freezing liquid, which reached her waist. Her hands were strung up high, binding her to the poles on either side. Her hair was a tangled mess, her face completely drained of color.
Soaking wet, she continuously muttered to herself.
"I was wrong... Please, let me go, I won't do it again..."
"You won't? Won't do what?"
A deep voice echoed through the space. The tall man standing by the edge of the pool took the cigarette from his mouth, exhaled a plume of smoke, and scoffed.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
